Schulenburg Starts Strong, Slaps Stockdale 40-0
Friday night was Walt Brock’s head coaching debut for Schulenburg High School football and he arrived in stellar fashion. The Shorthorns trounced the visiting Stockdale Brahmas with a final score of 40-0, moving the ball up the field throughout the game and keeping Stockdale on their side of the field defensively.
“It’s all about the kids,” Brock said. “The kids have worked hard and they haven’t given up. We push them in practice, we run them in practice, and they keep doing it. When you do that, you can stay in shape and have a good second half. That’s what it’s all about. I can’t say enough about our offense. I can’t say enough about our defense and Coach Valdez and that group there. I’m just so proud to be a Shorthorn.”
Schulenburg wide receiver and defensive back Kenny King scored a receiving touchdown on offense and connected on a 53-yard reception which put his team in the red zone with just under five minutes to play in the second quarter.
He followed that up with a pick six on defense which was the Horns first score of the game to go ahead 6-0 at the 3:51 mark.
“We all work together,” said King. “We played defense and stopped them in the backfield. That’s what we’ve been talking about in practice.”
The Brahmas presented a read-option offense that Schulenburg didn’t have any problem containing. A back and forth first quarter along with King’s deep ball in the second led to a fumble by the Shorthorns, which was recovered by Stockdale. The interception for a touchdown by King shortly after gave Schulenburg all the momentum they needed going into the second half. Horns senior quarterback Brett Janecek completed 14 of 22 attempts on the night for 269 passing yards and three touchdowns. One of his three touchdowns was another 50-yard play that put Schulenburg up 12-0 with 9:53 to go in the third quarter. With about three minutes left, the Shorthorns decided to go for it on 4th and 20 on the Stockdale 25 yard line, resulting in a touchdown pass to King for his second touchdown of the contest and a 19-0 lead in favor of the home team. A light, sideways rainfall occurred at the beginning of the fourth and final quarter, but it wasn’t until Janecek completed his third touchdown with a pass over the middle that turned into an 80-yard completion and a 26-0 scoreboard. Schulenburg continued to showoff their defense by intercepting a Stockdale pass that was followed by running the ball up the middle and a quarterback sneak at the one-yard line to go up 33-0. The Shorthorns capped off their impressive season opener by taking advantage of a botched punt snap from the Brahmas and returning it for a touchdown to put an exclamation point on a resounding victory. Schulenburg is on the road this Friday at Brazos with their eye on a 2-0 start.
