Schulenburg Girls Beat Flatonia
In a battle for southern Fayette County bragging rights and early District 28-2A positioning, the Schulenburg girls defeated Flatonia 49-27 Tuesday.
Flatonia jumped out to a 5-0 lead but after that is was all Schulenburg as the Lady Horns got 12 points from senior Erica Otto, 11 points from sophomore Airyanna Rodriguez and 10 from freshmen Kieryn Adams.
The Lady Horns improved to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in district, heading into a huge game Friday at No. 2-ranked Weimar (7-0).
“Schulenburg had a little bit more size inside and I didn’t expect them to shoot the ball as well as they did from outside,” said Flatonia head coach Tandy Betak, whose team fell to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in district.
The Lady Horns nailed five three-pointers, including two each by Adams and Jordan Sommer.
“Offensively we haven’t looked that good in a long time,” Schulenburg head coach Phillip Eddins said. “We’ve been presented with a lot of challenges this year – no summer ball, no tournaments and our volleyball team always goes deep in the playoffs, so we didn’t get them until late and it’s been a process of getting them out to shoot the ball – and we shot really well tonight.”
The Lady Horns were also stellar defensively.
“The biggest thing was we wanted to make sure the Betak girl (Caitlin) didn’t go off. She’s their best player. She’s a good one. When we’re locked in, we’re pretty good man-toman (defensively). Morgan Marburger did an awesome job tonight. We held her (Betak) to one point.”
Flatonia was led in scoring by Carly Bonds, who had 10 points. Shannen Novak scored five.
“We’ll go back to the drawing board and we’ll be ready for them next time when they come to our place,” Tandy Betak said
“We’re doing fine. I told the girls going into Christmas we wanted to be 3-0 or 2-1 in district. We’ve got a lot of (nondistrict) games over the break to work on some things.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Horns look capable of making a return trip to the state tournament after reaching the state semis last year – with six key returnees back from that team.
“Our expectations are to get back to San Antonio and bring back a gold trophy, there’s no doubt about it,” Eddins said. “They got a taste of it last year. We got there and we felt like we didn’t play our best game. We want to get back there and redeem ourselves.”
First they’ve got to get past Weimar.
Friday’s game against the Wildcats could be the first battle in a season-long war between the two.
“I’m looking forward to Friday,” Eddins said. “We’ve just got to play good defense and rebound the ball. If we don’t rebound we’ll be in trouble because they will be a lot bigger than we are.”
