Schulenburg Gets Revenge vs. Thrall, Rolls to Playoff Victory

The weather outside was frightful, and the Schulenburg girls basketball team made sure the conditions inside the gym weren’t any better for Thrall.

One day after their bidistrict playoff game in Caldwell was moved back a day because of winter weather, these two teams met up in La Grange, and the Lady Horns needed only a few minutes to show this would be a blowout.

The Schulenburg girls jumped out to leads of 10-0 and then 17-2 in the first quarter and rolled to a 56-28 win, even as the Lady Horns starters only played about half the game.

“We were aggressive with the ball today,” said Schulenburg head coach Phillip Eddins. “Our press was effective. Senior leadership took over. We got some young players on the floor today for a lot of minutes, and we might need them at some point in the future.”

The win was a measure of revenge for Schulenburg. It had been Thrall that had knocked Schulenburg out of the volleyball playoffs in the regional finals three months ago.

“The game went really well,” said Schulenburg’s Erica Otto, who scored 29 points. “There was definitely a bit of extra push to beat Thrall.”

“There was a whole lot of extra motivation coming into it. All the volleyball players were pretty fired up,” Eddins said.

About the only thing that went wrong for Schulenburg was that star inside player Airyanna Rodriguez had to leave the game with a knee injury.

Eddins said he didn’t know the severity of the injury after the game.

Friday’s victory improves the Lady Horns’ overall record to 20-3 as they prepare for an area round game against Normangee (13-7).

“This was a great start to the playoffs and we have four more (wins) to go to get back to where we want to be (the state tournament),” Eddins said.
