RT-C Keeps Rolling, Sweeps Fayetteville

Round Top-Carmine’s sparkling volleyball season continued with a sweep at Fayetteville Tuesday.

Looking every bit like the No. 3-ranked team in the state that they are, the Cubettes beat the Lady Lions 25-9, 25--12, 25-12 to improve to 29-7 overall and 5-0 in district.

“This is a super-fun group of girls,” said RT-C head coach Caitie Weishuhn. “We’re senior heavy this year. They’ve been playing together for a long time and it’s been fun to watch them put it all together.”

Fayetteville put up a fight in front of a big crowd – and a really loud student section, but the Cubettes were too tough.

“They are solid defensively. It’s hard to put anything away,” Fayetteville head coach Clint Jaeger said. “They didn’t have many hitting errors so we were just constantly trying to play defense. They didn’t give us many points. We had to earn everything.”

The last several years this group of Cubettes has made long playoff runs, but have fell just short of making it to the state tournament. RT-C’s last state tourney appearance was 2019.

But this could be the year they get back to the state’s biggest stage.

“The key for us is taking care of the ball on our side, making sure we are not giving the other team points or making errors,” Weishuhn said. “If we focus on us, we’ll be just fine.”

One of the biggest leaders of this year’s Cubettes has been senior Mallory Krause, who has tallied triple-doubles in six different matches this season.

“She’s a triple threat for our team,” Weishuhn said. “She leads us in kills and assists and is knocking on the door for digs and aces and everything else. I’m excited to watch her play out the rest of the season.”

Krause had 20 assists and 13 digs Tuesday. RT-C’s Tess Eilers led in kills with nine and she also had 13 digs. Kennedy Flinn and Kaysie Ward each had seven kills. Jill Eilers had 15 digs and 15 assists. Maggie Salinas had 17 digs.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s loss doesn’t diminish the growth Fayetteville has had this season. They now have a 14-21 overall record and 3-2 mark in district. Their only district losses have come against Round Top-Carmine.

“We have a young squad, and we have some older players who are young in experience,” Jaeger said. “It’s a learning curve and we just have to keep improving. The scores don’t always show it but we’ve improved a lot and I’m proud of them.”

Kayme Schley had four kills to lead Fayetteville and Peyton Jurecka had three. Schley had a team-high 16 digs, Emily Keilers had 13 and Marissa Rohde had nine. Rohde also had nine assists.

The La Grange volleyball team lost a heartbreaker to Taylot Tuesday at home, losing the final three sets after winning the first two. The final scores were 25-12, 25-22, 24-26, 21-25, 10-15. The loss drops the Lady Leps to 16-22 overall and 4-4 in district.

Carley Ulrich led the Lady Leps in kills with 17 and Kylie Trlicek had 15.

Trlicek also led the team in digs with 21 and Haylie Cooper had 20, Mara Colon 15 and Jena Jobb 12. Colon had two aces. Trlicek led in assists with 19 and Phoebe Tucker had 16.

Ulrich and Kenna Lamza each had two blocks.

In subvarsity action, the La Grange JV defeated Taylor 25-13, 25-12 to improve to 15-9 overall and 6-2 in district.

The La Grange freshman defeated Taylor 25-11, 25-15 to improve to 12-12 overall and 4-2 in district. All three teams will travel to Caldwell on Friday, October 13.

Schulenburg Blasts Ganado

The Schulenburg volleyball team blasted Ganado Tuesday, winning 25-3, 25-9, 25-10 as the Lady Horns improved to 27-12 overall and 6-0 in district. Jessalyn Gipson led the Lady Horns in kills with 15. Meredith Magliolo had eight. Emmrie Marx and Reagan Dusek had six each.

Madison Kunschick had five aces and Keaton Walker had four. Magliolo had four blocks and Gipson had two.

Kieryn Adams had a teamhigh 24 digs, and Landry Zapalac had 32 assists.

Flatonia Falls

The Flatonia volleyball team travelled to Weimar Tuesday and lost to the Lady Wildcats 20-25, 26-24, 20-25, 22-25. Flatonia stats from the match include: Aces: Aubree Mikulenka with 2. Assists: Summer Sodek with 18, Katelin Sullivan with 13, and Elzah Herrera with 7; Blocks: Emma Kosler with 3.
