Flatonia & Schulenburg Face Tough New 13-2A

Magazine Says Leps Will Finish Fourth in New Football District

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine is out on newstands statewide and the massive bible of preseason football weighs in at 402 pages and with a cost of $11.95.

Here’s a look at some of the local content of interest to Fayette County football fans:

La Grange is picked to finish fourth in the new District 13-4A.

The predicted order of finish is:

1. Cuero

2. Giddings

3. Navasota

4. La Grange

5. Gonzales

6. Smithville

Specifically about the Leps (who went 8-4 last season and return seven offensive and six defensive starters), the magazine says: “Athlete (Matthew) Johnson (1,034 yards, 9 TDs rushing; 530 yards, 8 TDs passing) leads the way, working alongside RB Taylor (766 yards, 5 TDs rushing) to keep the sticks moving. OL/DLs Mueller and Juno must help develop younger teammates, and versatile RB/LB Imhoff, WR/DB Baker and RB/LB Wilkerson will also figure into the Leopards’ success.

Flatonia is picked fourth and Schulenburg fifth in the new District 13-2A. The predicted order of finish is:

1. Shiner

2. Ganado

3. Weimar

4. Flatonia

5. Schulenburg

Flatonia’s Chris Johnston is picked as the district’s Offensive Preseason MVP.

Specifically about the Flatonia Bulldogs (who went 11-2 last season and return eight offensive starters and eight defensive starters) the magazine says: “RB Johnston (1,125 yards, 11 TDs rushing) leads an experienced offense that welcomes back OLs Ramirez, and Burton and WRs Olivares and Kloesel. DBs Hernandez, Venegas, (3 INTS) and Green (59 tackles) along with LB Gonzales (96 tackles) and DE Otto (32 tackles) are juniors and sophomores and lead the defense. QB candidate Cliffe will also be a defensive leader at LB.”

Specifically about the Shorthorns (who went 6-5 last season and return five offensive and eight defensive starters under new head coach Walt Brock) the magazine says: “Size up front and experience on defense should help the Shorthorns challenge in a difficult new district. LB/WR Adame (75 tackles), RB/LB Houston (65 tackles) and DB/WR King (4 INTs) lead the way. DE/OL Ricicar (6 sacks) will be a stalwart on both sides of the ball. QB Janecek (709 yards, 3 TDs passing, 267 yards, 6 TDs rushing) will direct an offense looking to pick up its pace in 2020. Kicker Lara is steady.”

Among Texas colleges, Dave Campbell lists Texas A&M as best, followed by The University of Texas and then Baylor.

The magazine predicts Oklahoma to win the Big 12 followed by Oklahoma State.

Texas A&M is predicted to finish second in the SEC East behind Alabama.
