LG Volleyball Falls in the Second Round

Against a onslaught of power and height from Gateway Prep, the La Grange volleyball season came to an end Thursday in Bastrop as the Lady Leps were swept by the Gators in the second round of the 4A playoffs.

Gateway won 25-16, 2523, 25-16 to advance to the regional quarterfinals.

“I was proud of our heart and our fight,” said La Grange head coach Leslie Coltrain. “Gateway was very athletic.”

La Grange ends its season with a 20-24 record as the volleyball careers of seven senior players (Haylie Cooper, Mara Colon, Jena Jobb, Phoebe Tucker, Lyndie Edson, Tori Harold and Teagan Branch) came to an end.

“It wasn’t the season we were expecting or the season we were wanting. We had seven seniors that have been here since I’ve gotten here as a coach. I told them I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to them,” Coltrain said.

Gateway (25-12), which had a big height advantage, controlled the first and third sets. La Grange nearly fought back from a 18-24 deficit in the second set to pull within one point before losing 25-23.

“There’s nobody who watched this match tonight that could say we didn’t fight,” Coltrain said.

Kylie Trlicek led the Lady Leps in kills with 13. Harold and Jobb each had six.

Jobb led in digs Thursday with 11 and Cooper had 10.

Tucker had a team-high 15 assists and Trlicek had 10.

Trlicek had two blocks. “We had a slow start this season but we pulled through and came together and started clicking, and overall it was a great season,” said Trlicek, a sophomore who leads a strong core of returnees for this team. “The seniors really stepped up this year. I have really high expectations for next season with the people we have coming back.”
