The Lady Leps had a week to remember.

On the heels of beating Giddings by seven last Tuesday, the La Grange girls basketball team kept the momentum going with an utterly dominating 64-28 win over visiting Smithville Friday.

The 20-4A race is far from over yet, but La Grange has certainly established itself as the favorite. The Lady Leps are 4-2 overall but 3-0 in district play.

“Overcoming Giddings and playing as a team was big for us and we did the same exact thing here tonight,” said La Grange junior Aysia Grant, who led the team in scoring with 16 points.

“I knew coming into this week, this was going to be two big games,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan. “I didn’t know how we would respond after it being so physical and emotional against Giddings but I thought we played pretty well tonight (against Smithville).”

At times the La Grange defense was so suffocating, Smithville had trouble even getting the ball past half court.

La Grange continues to get big contributions from varsity newcomers.

Sophomores Maddi Fritz and Keslyn Davis each scored 11. Lyric Sampson, a junior new to varsity, scored seven.

“Keslyn’s a really good ballhandler, Maddi’s a really good shooter, Lyric contributes a lot, they just all add a lot to this team,” Grant said. “They were what we were missing.”

Even amidst these big wins, Golan sees room for improvement.

“I’d like us to clean things up, not make so many turnovers and play smarter in some situations,” he said.

The La Grange girls don’t play again until Dec. 29 when they host Weimar at 1 p.m. before jumping back into district play Jan. 8 here at 6 p.m. against Austin Achieve.

“Hopefully we don’t get out of shape over the break,” Grant said.
