LG Gets First Volleyball Victory of 2020 Season
The La Grange volleyball team grabbed its first victory of the season Tuesday afternoon with a sweep of Salado.
The Lady Leps (1-5) had lost their first five matches of the season, all against very good teams, including a five-set loss to Caldwell earlier Tuesday morning, so the win over Salado took on a little added importance.
“For sure, morale-wise, it was very important,” said La Grange head coach Leslie Coltrain. “The girls and I talked about how we put together a tough preseason every year. We want to play people that are going to prepare us for district and for the postseason. I don’t want to play people we can just walk into the gym and beat easily. I want to have to work for them. These two teams today, really competitive, this Salado team we may match up with them in the playoffs.
“We tell them not to look at their record until we get to district but they are kids. It’s hard. Now I think a little of the pressure is off of them and we can really start moving forward.”
Three of La Grange’s five losses have come in five set thrillers, but against Salado they made sure there was no drama.
The loss to Caldwell came by a score of 26-24, 21-25, 10-25, 27-25, 12-15.
The win over Salado came via a 25-18, 25-18, 25-16 score.
The La Grange girls continue a lengthy run of home matches with three more this weekend.
They host Wimberley Friday at 6 p.m. and then a dual match against Cuero and Hallettsville Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
Every one of these matches take on added importance Coltrain said, because COVID-19 restrictions eliminated all tournaments this season.
“Normally we’d play at least 22 matches just in tournament play, now we have 29 total that we can put on our schedule,” Coltrain said. “So you have to learn something from every single point, every single set, every single match.”
