Three weeks ago, the La Grange and Giddings softball teams waged a slugfest that the Lady Leps won 12-8.

In a big district rematch Tuesday runs were a lot harder to come by but the La Grange girls won again, this time 2-0.

Freshman pitcher Marissa Gonzales hurled a gem, throwing a complete game four-hit shutout against the powerful Giddings lineup. She only struck out two, but her defense played stellar behind her.

“I love Marissa so much,” said catcher Missy Muras, who had two of La Grange’s five hits, including a double. “She’s new to this, but doing a great job.”

La Grange scored single runs in the second and fourth inning (Natalie Blackwell and Haylie Cooper were driven in by Abigail Dela Rosa and Muras) and that was all the offense the Lady Leps would need thanks to the pitching of Gonzales.

“I’m feeling pretty excited,” Gonzales said after the win.

“I’m so proud of her,” La Grange head coach Amanda Arlund said of Gonzales. “She works with pressure on her so well.

“At the beginning of the season she had two pitches and she has much more in her arsenal now, she has more control, more movement, she’s throwing harder. That’s a credit to her work ethic.”

Tuesday’s victory improves the Lady Leps to 19-5 and they are 6-1 in district, moving them two games ahead the Lady Buffaloes for second place in District 20-4A.

“Any time we play Giddings we know it’s going to be a tough one,” Arlund said. “Getting this win is huge and getting it in this way was huge. Our defense was on point tonight.”

Tuesday’s victory also keeps alive La Grange’s hopes of a district title. They trail Smithville by one game in the standings. Those two state-ranked teams (Smithville is No. 3, La Grange is No. 13) meet next Tuesday in Smithville at 6:45 p.m. Smithville beat La Grange 10-9 three weeks ago.

“This sets us up for a showdown, and that’s what we wanted,” Arlund said. “We came out on the wrong end last time but we feel like we can change that.”

Schulenburg

The Schulenburg softball team defeated Ganado 6-2 Tuesday as Brianna Vavra threw a complete game six-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Regan Lux hit a triple, Rilee Sanchez had two hits, including a double and Tamara Otto also had two hits. Otto and Lux each scored two runs and Sani Thompson drove in two runs.

The Lady Horns improved to 11-7 overall with a win and 8-4 in district.

Flatonia

The Flatonia softball team lost to Weimar Tuesday 10-1 as the Lady Bulldogs fell to 15-10- 1 overall. Laurel Betak had the only hit for the Lady Bulldogs. Annie Charanza pitched a complete game for the Lady Bulldogs.
