Lep Baseball Seniors Honored
On what would have been their last home game on Tuesday, the five senior members of the La Grange baseball team got together one last time to be honored for their contributions to the program.
“This senior class was not a large group by numbers, but a talented group. One we will truly miss,” said La Grange head baseball coach Robert Barber. “It was extremely difficult to tell the kids that we were not going to play again (because of the coronavirus), especially the seniors. The underclassmen and coaches have another year together, but the seniors do not. They are the ones that this hurts the most. They are missing out on the final semester with their buddies. Not only on the baseball field but so many other activities. Prom, Sports Banquet, Academic Banquet, and possibly graduation. This is the reason we put together the short ceremony for them. I wanted to give them one last time on the field with their classmates. It was really an emotional and special night. Class of 2020 we will miss you and we love you.”
Barber talked about each of the five seniors:
“Dawson Loehr has been a utility guy for us since his freshman year playing several different positions. This yearhe took over the #1 role on the mound for us and was dominant in his three starts this year.”
“Jeffrey Recek has been a starter for us for three years now. He was really starting to figure it out and was off to a great start this spring. He will definitely be tough to replace because he could play anywhere on the infield for us. Plus this year he was able to also give us some innings on the mound.”
“Coltin Whitaker has been a varsity player for three years now with the last two being our starting catcher. We loved what Coltin brought behind the plate. He brought his linebacker mentality behind the plate which is what you look for in a catcher.”
“Trey Hall has been a varsity player for two years now. He was mainly a pitcher for us but also played right field for us as well. He was another one that put a lot of work in before the season started and it showed. He had one of the best outings of the year holding 6A Odessa to 1 run over 6 innings.”
“Coy Cason didn’t get a chance to play varsity ball this year. He moved back from Florida to graduate with his buddies this year. He was not cleared by UIL to play varsity competition. So he played with our JV. We really enjoyed the short time we had with Coy. He had a great attitude and brought great leadership to our younger kids.”
