Lago Vista Keeps Leps Still Searching for First Win

La Grange is still looking for its first football win of the season.

But the Leps are getting closer.

In their narrowest loss of the season so far, the Leps rallied from a 28-0 halftime deficit to make a game of it against Lago Vista before eventually losing 35-20.

The power to the Leopard Stadium lights actually went out with 1:41 left in the game after the Vikings had just forced a turnover on downs by the Leps.

After a few minutes of trying to get the lights back on the game was called.

La Grange amassed 295 yards of total offense and got three touchdown runs from junior quarterback Clayton Cooper but it was not enough. “A win and a cold front would make us feel a whole lot better,” said La Grange head coach Kyle Cooper. “I’m proud of our kids. They are battling. It’s not easy to be 0-4. We’re going to be a really good football team. Sometimes it takes time. It’s frustrating. It takes fire to make steel and we’re in the fire right now.”

Lago Vista rushed for 375 yards, led by 302 from Wyatt Herring, who also ran for three touchdowns. Lago Vista quarterback Dominic Garcia ran for the Vikings’ other two scores as they improved their record to 2-2.

The Leps started the game by marching 52 yards on 12 plays before their drive fizzled at the Vikings 14-yard-line.

Then Lago Vista scored 28 unanswered points before halftime.

After the break the Leps came back strong, with a pair of Clayton Cooper third quarter touchdown runs trimming the Lago lead to 28-14.

“We just started running the ball a little more and the passes were working,” said La Grange lineman Ethan Tarnowski.

The Vikings answered back with Herring’s 34yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.

La Grange cut the Vikings lead to just 15 points on Cooper’s third touchdown run of the night, but they would get no closer.

“Offensively we decided to simply some things in the second half and the defense continued to fly to the ball,” Kyle Cooper said. “I’m very proud of their effort. They fought themselves back into it.”

La Grange’s Le’Kayvion Broussard ran for 98 yards.

Julian Sherman caught three passes for 73 yards and Jeffrey Cabrera caught six passes for 54.

The Leps tossed a pair of interceptions, but they did get a takeway themselves when Oliver Gunn forced a fumble recovered by Hunter Sabo.

La Grange has a real chance to get its first win of the season this Friday as Splendora (1-3) comes to town for Homecoming in the final nondistrict game of the season for the Leps.

Splendora is coming off a 62-0 loss to Hamshire Fannett last week. Last season La Grange beat Splendora 38-7.

“We’ve had a tough start but we’re working hard and we’re going to be a good football team,” said La Grange linebacker Austin Grooms.
