In the strangest of seasons, one thing was reliable.

The La Grange girls were going to beat up on their district basketball foes.

Through all the craziness of a season amidst a pandemic, the Lady Leps have taken care of business every night against their District 20-4A foes, and Wednesday’s 59-45 victory at home over Giddings officially clinched the La Grange girls the district title.

Even last year’s Lady Leps, which tied a school record for wins, had to settle for a share of the district title, but this team won it outright. With two district games remaining, the La Grange girls are now 8-4 overall and 6-0 in district (8-0 if you count forfeits) and no one can catch them.

“It’s a huge accomplishment. We’ve worked hard for this all season, pushing each other. I feel like we deserve it,” said sophomore Keslyn Davis of the district title.

Davis is one of a trio of sophomores that have taken on key roles with this team.

“I told the players after the game that this is something special,” said La Grange head coach Heath Golan. “As good a teams as we’ve had in the past we couldn’t get it done, You have to appreciate these when they come around. All the adversity we’ve overcome this year with injuries here and there and COVID, it’s special to see them get rewarded for that. It was a good night getting that done.”

Wednesday La Grange took control early, leading by 14 at halftime despite some foul trouble.

The La Grange girls kept the Buffaloes at arm’s length the rest of the way. A flurry of late three-pointers by Giddings made the final score a little closer than the game had been most of the night.

Junior Aysia Grant led La Grange in scoring with 13 points and sophomores Camille Gonzalez and Maddi Fritz added 12 and nine points respectively.

The Lady Leps had edged Giddings by just seven points the first time these two teams met a month ago, but this one was much more lopsided.

“We had a lot less turnovers this time,” Davis said.

“We made more shots,” Golan said, comparing the two meetings. “Last time against them we had only played like four games. Camille knocked down a few tonight, Aysia made lay-ups when we were able to get out and run a bit.”

The La Grange girls play at Smithville Friday and then at Round Rock Christian Tuesday in a non-district game before closing out the regular season at home Friday Feb. 5 against Austin LBJ.
