La Grange Sweeps Smithville in Soccer

It was a celebratory doubleheader at Leopard Stadium for the La Grange soccer teams Tuesday.

The La Grange girls beat Smithville 4-1, while the Leps beat the Tigers 4-0.

In that boys game, Salvador Aguirre-Cardenas scored three goals and Jonathan Vazquez Hernandez scored the other.

It was only the second home game of the season for the Leps.

Antonio Landaverde was the goal keeper for La Grange as their defense preserved the shutout.

The Leps are now 3-1-0 in district play and 8-5-2 overall and host Hearne Friday at 6 p.m.

In the girls game, Megan Davis scored two goals for La Grange and Kaelyn Ortiz and Camila Martinez each scored single goals.

The Lady Leps led just 2-1 at halftime, but blew the game open in the second half.

“In terms of field position and shots on goal we dominated the first half as well, just couldn’t get those ones to go,” La Grange head girls soccer coach Chris Westall said. “The second half gave us more opportunities and we were able to get more in. Got a lot of players to get playing time in this one, and that’s important.

“Smithville’s always a hard team to figure out. This was a grinder for a while. Their goalie was making some solid saves.”

Ortiz also had two assists for the Lady Leps.

“Kaelyn had two beautiful corner kicks that we scored off of,” Westall said.

“Tonight we worked together well, saw our mistakes and fixed them,” Ortiz said. “We’ve definitely improved as a team as the season has gone on.”

The defensive player of the game was Angel Harrison.

The Lady Leps are now 8-2 overall and 1-0 in district and were set to host Rockdale in a make-up game Thursday Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at Leopard Stadium.

“For the first time this season we’re at full strength,” Westall said. “We’ve had COVID issues, injuries, but it’s all come together for district.”
