Jack Schley Builds on Family Legacy With Fayetteville

Fayetteville baseball player Jack Schley has started his high school tenure off with a bang as he recently qualified for state track in the triple jump. As track and baseball seasons intertwine, Schley has provided a heavy workload for a Fayetteville baseball team that is threatening to head to states for the second time in three years. He has 18 runs, 15 RBI’s, is 4-1 as a starter on the mound, and comes from an athletic family. Schley is the grandson of Fayetteville coaching legend Emil Schley and the son of former Fayetteville baseball state champion Daniel Schley.

“For him to be able to go to state his freshman year is phenomenal,” said Fayetteville head baseball coach Clint Jaeger. “His contributions on the mound and at the plate have been very important to our success.”

Schley’s scorching hot start in year one has given him the nod for this edition’s Athlete of the Week.

Question: How would you describe your experience at state track?

Answer: “It was great, I had a good time. I wish I could’ve done a little bit better, but I think I did well. I almost hit my PR again and I had a pretty good jump.”

Question: What’s it like having family that’s had so much athletic success at Fayetteville?

Answer: “It puts pressure on me to have as much success as they have. Just live up to their expectations.”

Question: What’s been the most surprising thing about high school so far?

Answer: “How much work you have to put in to get good grades. It’s not as easy as past years at school.”

Question: What’s something valuable you’ve learned as an athlete from your dad or grandpa?

Answer: “It takes a lot of hard work and preparation to succeed.”

Question: How does high school baseball compare to previous leagues you’ve played in?

Answer: “It’s a lot different. Pitching is harder, kids are better all around, and it’s not as easy as it has been in the past years.”

Question: Who’s your favorite player for the Houston Astros and why?

Answer: “I like Jeremy Pena because he’s a young player and he has had a lot of success in his few years of playing.”

Question: What do you like best about playing for Coach Jaeger?

Answer: “He’s a great coach. He knows a lot about baseball and he always wants us to succeed and do our best.”

Question: What’s been your most memorable game of the 2023 season?

Answer: “Probably against Spurger. I had a great game pitching. I hit 81 (mph) pitching for the first time and that’s a big accomplishment for me.”

Question: Which activity would you rather do, a puzzle or a board game?

Answer: “A board game because it doesn’t involve as much thinking.”

Question: What are you looking forward to the most at Fayetteville High School with it being your first year?

Answer: “I hope to win a state championship in baseball this year.”

Schley has already become an essential asset for Lions baseball, a team that breeds winning.
