Giddings Edges Lady Leps in 5
On a night when senior Jena Jobb recorded her 1,000th career dig, her La Grange volleyball team pushed Giddings to the brink Friday.
But after a tense five-set match the Lady Buffaloes prevailed 25-20, 25-13, 22-25, 21-25, 15-6.
The victory keeps Giddings tied atop the district standings with Taylor, while La Grange fell to 6-5 in district and 18-23 overall.
Friday was the home finale for the Lady Leps. They head to Tuesday’s regular season finale with a playoff spot already assured.
After losing the first two sets, La Grange fought back to win the next two – a spark that could bode well for the postseason.
“The girls fought back really hard,” said La Grange head coach Leslie Coltrain.
“It means so much to the seniors and the whole team, the fight we showed tonight,” Jobb said.
Kylie Trlicek led La Grange in kills with 14. Carley Ulrich and Jobb had 11. Tory Harold had 10.
Haylie Cooper led in digs with 19. Trlicek had 18 and Jobb had 13.
Cooper had two aces. Phoebe Tucker led in assists with 23 and Trlicek had 18.
Jobb was honored for her big milestone with “1K” balloons after the match.
“It’s amazing,” Jobb said of reaching the 1,000-dig plateau.
“Any time you can amass those numbers, it’s special,” Coltrain said. “Jena’s done anything and everything we’ve asked her to do.”
Jobb was one of seven Lady Lep seniors playing in their final home match Friday, including Mara Colon, Haylie Cooper, Phoebe Tucker, Lyndie Edson, Tori Harold and Teagan Branch.
“They are a special group, fun to be around, and really good kids,” Coltrain said. “We’re going to miss them, the energy and fun they bring to the program.”
But before they are gone, they have one more playoff run to go.
