La Grange vs. La Vernia

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: La Grange

Records: La Grange is 0-2. La Vernia is 2-0.

Of Note: La Grange’s brutal early season schedule continues against undefeated La Vernia, which has really raised eyebrows with a 55-21 season-opening win over Cuero followed by a 28-19 win last week over defending regional finalist Navarro. La Vernia rallied from deficits of 13-0 and 19-7 to win against Navarro, led by two second half touchdown passes by 6-foot-6 quarterback Gage Lowry. La Vernia lost fumbles on three of their first four plays from scrimmage Friday but still found a way to win. Lowry completed 12 of his 13 passes for 295 yards in the win over Cuero ... La Grange is looking to build some momentum after two frustrating losses to open the season a 40-14 setback to Rockdale, followed by last week’s 61-23 loss to Canyon Lake. D.J. Taylor has run for a combined 253 yards and three touchdowns over the first two games for La Grange.

Last meeting: La Grange beat La Vernia 43-39 last season as Caden Cooper ran for two touchdowns and threw for two TDs.

Schulenburg vs. Yorktown

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Brazos

Records: Schulenburg is 2-0. Yorktown is 1-1.

Of Note: It’s been a weird first two games for Yorktown this season. They lost to Blanco 48-0 in the season opener before beating Weimar 40-21 last week. Against Weimar, Yorktown quarterback Drew Alexander threw for 221 yards, to five different receivers ... Schulenburg has had a tremendous start to the 2020 season under new head coach Walt Brock. The Shorthorns beat Stockdale 40-0 in the season opener and then Brazos 58-6 last week. Schulenburg quarterback Brett Janecek has been strong, throwing for 430 yards so far this season, 269 in the win over Stockdale and then last week he threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Schulenburg’s Keisean Johnson, Kenny Schramek and Kenny King all scored two touchdowns each last week ... This is Schulenburg’s Homecoming game.

Last meeting: Schulenburg hasn’t played Yorktown since 2004, when the Horns lost 6-0.

Flatonia vs. Falls City

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Where: Flatonia

Records: Flatonia 2-0. Falls City is 1-1.

Of Note: F.

Up next: Flatonia plays its first game on their new artificial turf field this Friday and it’s homecoming against a Falls City team that went 13-2 and advanced to the state semifinals last year before losing to eventual state champ Mart. But the Beavers graduated a very talented senior class from last season and only return three offensive and four defensive starters from a year ago, and it showed last week in a 58-0 loss to Poth. Falls City had beaten Three Rivers 41-20 the week before, however. Flatonia, meanwhile, also graduated a lot of stars from last year’s team, but so far this season their success has continued with a 27-6 season opening win over Runge and then a 25-6 win over 3A Stockdale last week. Chris Johnston leads the Bulldogs with 146 rushing yards and four touchdowns this season.

Last meeting: Flatonia hasn’t played Falls City since they were district rivals back in 2017, when the Beavers won 37-0.

This week’s games: Falls City at Flatonia Yorktown at Schulenburg Shiner at Smithville Luling at Weimar Hallettsville at Ganado
