Former Schulenburg Coach Larry Tidwell Inducted Into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame
The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches inducted former Schulenburg coach Larry Tidwell into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
A ceremony took place Saturday, May 21, at the Texas Ballroom in the Hilton San Antonio Airport Hotel. Tidwell joined seven other players, coaches and contributors in the Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
Tidwell announced his retirement earlier this year after more than 40 years of coaching women’s basketball. Tidwell finished this season as head coach of the Dallas Christian College Women’s Basketball Team.
His storied career in women’s basketball included eight years at Schulenburg High. He was the head coach of the Lady Horns basketball team from 1984 to 1992. He left Schulenburg to become an assistant coach at Baylor University, his first collegiate job. Tidwell went on to coach at Mexia High School, TCU, Lamar, UT-Rio Grande Valley, and Kansas.
In Schulenburg, Tidwell also served as athletic director. His time there coincided with some great years in both boys and girls athletics. Tidwell’s children grew up in Schulenburg, and he maintains strong ties to the community. Accordingly, a big crowd of local folks attended the ceremony in San Antonio.
