Fayetteville Has Busy Day at State Track
Fayetteville’s Brooklyn Jaeger, Keagan Supak, Landon Urban, Cole Fenghaus and the boy’s 4x400 relay team also represented Fayette County at the 1A state track and field championships held at the University of Texas Saturday.
In the morning Urban was seventh in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, and Fenghaus was sixth in the 3200 meters, finishing in a time of 10:40.75.
Jaeger started the afternoon action for the Lions Saturday as she ran in the 100 meter and 200 meter events, which was followed by Supak in the 400 meter. Supak finished seventh in the 400 meter and Jaeger missed out on a medal by not even half a second on both attempts, placing fourth in the 100 meter with a time of 12.73 seconds. Kiley Cummings of Blackwell ended up finishing third at 12.51 seconds. For the 200 meter, Jaeger finished fourth again with a time of 26.46 seconds, falling just behind Coolidge’s Amaya Brown with a time of 26.21 seconds.
“It’s super loud,” said Jaeger on the atmosphere at the state championships. “It’s way more people than I thought it was going to be. It’s super intense. I was very nervous before all of my races, but when I was running and the crowd was cheering me on, it really helped. I didn’t feel as nervous. I’m pretty proud of my 100 and 200 performance. I definitely think I could’ve done better on my 200 at the end, but I’m very proud of what I have done this season.”
The Fayetteville boy’s 4x400 relay team then ran under the lights for one of the final events of the night, unfortunately finishing ninth.
“They stepped up to the plate in every single race and performance we did,” said Fayetteville head track and field coach Mitch Madden. “Extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished this year and they’ll all be back again next year because most of them are freshmen and sophomores.”
The Lions relay team consists of Keagan Supak, Logan Fritsch, Landon Urban, and Reid Gross. Urban is the only senior on the team.
“With it being my last year, it was an honor to be at state,” Urban said. “This is a young group of guys that are going to do good in the following years.”
Supak is only a freshman and enjoyed bonding with his teammates at the highest level.
“It’s a really, really cool feeling to be here at state,” said Supak. “I never thought I could be here this young. It’s fun to be here with my friends.”
All four runners on the team are also a part of the baseball team. They played a baseball game the night before the track meet and won against Highland with a final score of 16-0, finishing the game at 8 p.m. and then arriving to the meet at 11 a.m. the next morning. Logan Fritsch is a catcher on the baseball team.
“It’s pretty crazy to go from playing baseball to going and running track at state,” Fritsch said. “That’s what you have to have at a small school. You play a lot of sports. It’s still a cool experience. I hope we make it far in baseball like we did in cross-country and track.”
Just like the boy’s relay team, Jaeger is young as well, only being a sophomore. Fayetteville has plenty to look forward to in the next few years for athletics.
