Brett Janecek has taken the reins of the quarterback position as a senior for Schulenburg High School football and is off to an impressive start. Schulenburg is currently 4-0 with their most recent win on the road against district opponent Flatonia, who was also undefeated until last Friday. Janecek had a perfect completion percentage going five for five and added a rushing touchdown in a hard-fought victory that came down to the very last play. “He’s a good leader for our kids”, said Schulenburg head football coach Walt Brock. “He helps get kids to practice, he calls them. He does such a great job in the classroom, on the field, and outside of school. We appreciate his hard work ethic and leadership skills.”

Janecek has certainly earned his way to a spot as the new Player of the Week.

Question: What does the game of football mean to you?

Answer: “It’s a brotherhood. Everybody on the team is like my brother. I give them rides to practice, home, and all of that. To me, it helps to see everybody else succeed. I like to do everything for everybody else and help them out.”

Question: How does Schulenburg high school stand out from others?

Answer: “I think we’re really making an impact now. Everybody’s seeing what we can really do as a team. I think we can show people what we can really do.”

Question: If you were elected President of the United States, what’s one thing you would change in this country and why?

Answer: “I really don’t know. I’ve never really thought into that.”

Question: What are your biggest responsibilities as a senior quarterback on the football team?

Answer: “Leading the team and making everybody better. Making sure everybody wants it for the team. Being that leader.”

Question: Say you’ve been selected to star in a TV show. What kind of show would it be and what character would you play?

Answer: “I like a lot of TV shows. I probably couldn’t choose one, but it’d have to be something funny. I’d have to be a funny character in there.”

Question: If you were given a free vacation to any place in the world, where would you go and what would you do?

Answer: “Somewhere to the beach. I love the beach. Just hang out, relax, spend time with family or friends, or whoever I’m there with and just enjoy myself.”

Question: What’s the best piece of advice your dad (a member of the 1991 Schulenburg state football team) has given you, football-wise?

Answer: “Fight through everything. He’s told me a countless amount of stories about all the good ole days. Pretty much taught me to live my own legacy and work through all adversity.”

Question: Name a famous person who’s had the most significant influence on you and why?

Answer: “I look up a lot to Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning for what they’ve done for the game and what a leader can do on the football field.”

Question: What would you say is your biggest achievement in life thus far?

Answer: “I feel like I’ve done a lot of good things. A lot of them are sports related just because I love seeing the team succeed. A lot of it’s happening right now. I’m making a lot of memories. I feel like we’re doing a lot of good things as a team. It just makes me feel good.”

Question: How does your senior season compare to your previous seasons on the football team?

Answer: “Well, right now with all the COVID stuff going on, I never really know which game is going to be my last. So I just try to live in the moment and make everything as best as I can.”

With an undefeated start and senior duties to carry, Janecek is a prime example of what it takes to lead a team.
