Senior Citizens Group Holds Spring Meeting, Luncheon
Sixty La Grange area residents fifty and older gathered at the Randolph Recreation Center Gym on April 16 for the La Grange Senior Citizen Activity Center spring membership meeting and luncheon.
In honor of our nation’s semiquincentennial, the tables and a birthday cake were decorated in red, white, and blue. Many of the attendees wore the colors, too. The business meeting included election of new board members: Peggy Pfeiffer, Paula Luther, and Linda Urban. Several board members will be rotating off this year including Jeanette Huelsebusch, Doris Lidiak, Judy Zuhn, and Marilyn Strmiska. Information was presented about the upcoming day trip to the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner on May 21. Attendees were encouraged to sign up if they are interested. Door prizes were given to ten lucky winners.
The program followed the business meeting. The speaker was Larry Jackson, the Executive Committee Chair of the Fayette County Semiquincentennial Commission. He opened his presentation by reminding attendees of the words they said at the beginning of the meeting during the Pledge of Allegiance. We are one nation, united, with liberty and justice for all. Next he gave information about the events happening throughout the year. In February, a specially commissioned play was presented by La Grange High School students called Rhapsody of Freedom It details the life of the Marquis de Lafayette and his ties to our county. An art contest was held for children in the county. Nine hundred submissions were received.
On June 14, there will be a Flag Day event at the county courthouse on the square in La Grange at 2 p.m. It is family friendly and will include speakers, music and refreshments. On July 4, there will be an evening event on the courthouse square along with annual events like the Round Top parade and the picnic in St. John.
Other planned activities include a countywide window decorating contest, a walking program to “Walk Across Texas” ( howdyhealth.tamu.edu), and the distribution of the Liberty Trees. There will be 250 trees given to county residents to plant in the location of their choice. The trees also come with mulch, fencing, and a special metal medallion to commemorate the planting.
Applications to receive a tree will open on July 4 with distribution taking place in the fall. The commission is accepting sponsorships from individuals and businesses.

Following the presentation, everyone enjoyed a wonderful lunch from Koopman Catering and music provided by Zach Novak. The cake was cut after the singing of Happy Birthday to America. The board members met afterwards.
