Gilbert Zimmermann, 89, of Georgetown, passed away on Aug. 12, 2023, in Georgetown surrounded by his loving children.

Born on March 25, 1934, to John and Annie Zimmermann in the farming community of Swiss Alp near Schulenburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Zimmermann, his parents, John and Annie Zimmermann, siblings Hugo, Werner, Elmer, and Erna Zimmermann. Gilbert’s life was one defined by unwavering dedication to family, faith, community, and adventure.

Gilbert’s legacy continues through his children: Michael Zimmermann, Robert Zimmermann, and daughter, Dianna Vaughan, along with her husband Mark, all of Georgetown. His memory is also carried forward by his granddaughters, Tiffany Zimmermann and Shelby Styles, and grandsons, Michael Zimmermann, and Brandon Zimmermann. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Elroy Zimmermann, and sister, Gladys Weir.

Gilbert attended Washington

Country School in Swiss Alp and La Grange High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Lillian Hagens on April 8, 1956. Their journey of love and partnership began, leading them through various locales including Houston, Victoria, Pflugerville, and Bertram, before finally settling in Georgetown in 1996.

Gilbert’s path was one that traversed countless roads. Following his high school days, he trucked tile from Ohio to Texas, eventually joining Consolidated Trucking in Houston. He then moved to Victoria, delivering milk door-to-door for Carnation. His growing family brought them back to Houston, where he drove for Central Freight Lines. In 1972, they made a home in the small town of Pflugerville (population of 549 at the time), where Gilbert lent his support to his brother Werner’s venture, Princess Craft Campers. This period of their life witnessed Gilbert’s active involvement in his community, becoming one of Pflugerville’s inaugural City Council members and a dedicated volunteer firefighter. Feeling the call of the road, he bought an 18-wheel rig and started his own company hauling 150-foot steel and concrete bridge beams across Texas contributing to infrastructure that countless individuals continue to rely upon. Odds are you have driven over many bridges containing beams he delivered.

Retirement marked a chapter of leisure and joy for Gilbert and Lillian. Settling in Sun City, Georgetown, they enjoyed gardening, exploring in their golf cart, and creating cherished memories with their grandchildren and grand puppies. Gilbert’s lifelong passion for camping endured, leading to numerous adventures with family. Post-retirement, he and Lillian embarked on journeys in their travel trailer, their explorations spanning the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, and international destinations such as Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France, England, and the Netherlands. A highlight was their cherished annual trip to Las Vegas, shared with extended family.

Gilbert actively attended Hill Country Bible Church of Georgetown where he enjoyed friendships he had made with his Sun City neighbors and Church community.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2038 FM 3171 Schulenburg, TX 78956, or a charity of your choice.

As we honor Gilbert’s memory, let us remember the roads he journeyed, the bridges he built, and the love he showed to all those fortunate to have known him.
