John Donald Sommer, of Round Rock, passed away on March 22, 2024, at the age of 90.

John was born June 29, 1933, in Ellinger to the late Herbert and Rosie Sommer. He was baptized on July 20, 1933, by Pastor Robert Heise and Confirmed on March 30, 1947, by Pastor H. T. Flachmeier at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

After completing his military service, John served as a teacher and administrator in the Bandera, Edna, and Canyon public school systems. Later, he served as Program Director for Fine Arts for the Texas Education Agency. John received his Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Lutheran University, his Master of Education-Music, Educational Administration from Southwest Texas State University, and his Doctor of Education in Education Administration from Texas Tech University. John played the cornet and had a heart felt joy and love of music, participating in various brass groups and choirs throughout his life. John also blessed others with his skill of woodworking.

John is preceded in his death by his wife, Patsy Flachmeier Sommer; his brother Herbert Sommer Jr.; and his parents, Herbert and Rosie Sommer.

John is survived by his wife, Bess Sommer of Round Rock; his children, Sheryl Morsman and husband Dorman of Oklahoma City, Okla., Karen Atkins and her husband Terry of Clifton, Barbara Weden and her husband David of Buda, and Bruce Sommer and his wife Karman of Houston; his grandchildren, Erica Weden, Nathaniel Atkins, Justin Weden, JohnA. Sommer, Matthew Sommer, and Rebecca Sommer; and his great-grandchildren, Margaret Weden and Fletcher Weden.

A visitation was held at Beck Funeral Home, 15709 Ranch Road 620 in Austin, on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Burial was held on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at the New La Grange City Cemetery in La Grange at 11 a.m.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Austin, at 2 p.m. with a reception following the service.

In-lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s honor may be made to St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 606 W 15th Street, Austin, TX or Texas Lutheran University, 1000 West Court Street, Seguin, TX.
