Funeral services for Phillip Procell, 88 of Giddings, were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, at Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waldeck with Tim Pitts officiating. Burial followed in the Waldeck Cemetery.
Visitation was held on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family was present for visitation Friday evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Phillip Gilbert Procell Jr. was born on June 1, 1937, in Pin Oak, Texas, to Phillip Gilbert Procell Sr. and Lilly Hettwig (Lehmann) Procell. He was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Paige. He served in the United States Army from Sept. 21, 1960, until receiving his Honorable Discharge on Sept. 20, 1962. Phillip was united in marriage to Carol Kessler on May 25, 1980, at Waldeck Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waldeck. At the age of 15, Phillip started working for Hershel Doyle at City Meat Market in Giddings as a butcher. In 1968, he went out on his own and opened 77 Meat Market, which he operated for 31 years until retiring in 1999. He was a talented fiddle player, playing in several bands throughout the years as well as at many celebrations and parties. When he wasn’t working at the market or playing his fiddle, he usually could be found taking care of his cattle.
Phillip passed away the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, at his home in Giddings.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Lilly Procell; his sister, Lillie Mae Voight; his two brothers, Charley Procell and Arthur Procell; his parents-in-law, Louis and LaVern Kessler, and four brothers-in-law, Alton Voight, Allen Orts, Cornell Kunkel, and Wayne Kessler.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Carol Procell of Giddings; three sisters, Ruby Herzog and her husband, Ronnie of Smithville, Shirley Orts of Paige, and Ethel Kunkel of Paige; brother-in-law, Barry Kessler and his wife, Suzanne of Giddings, as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Jason Kessler, Justin Kessler, Jarrett Kessler, Ernie Voight, James Steinbach, and Troy Kunkel.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
