Mary Ann Delbasty Powell, also known affectionately to all as Mom or Granny, passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2024, at the age of 80 in La Grange.

Born on Sept. 25, 1943, in Abbeville, La., to Irvin Paul Delbasty, Sr. and Frances Eulyn Morgan Delbasty, she carried the spirit of her heritage throughout a life marked by love, passion, and courage.

Granny was a beacon of strength and joy, having graduated from Clear Creek High School before furthering her education at San Jacinto Jr. College. She dedicated 30 years of her professional life to Total Petrochemical, where she was not only a valued employee but also a friend to many. Mary Ann’s work ethic and commitment to service extended beyond her professional role, as evidenced by her deep involvement in various community organizations.

Her spirit of volunteerism was tireless. Mary Ann was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange, and The Catholic Daughters of America Court No. 1962. She was passionately involved with Second Chance Emporium, Fayette County Sheriff’s Posse, FMH Women’s Auxiliary, FCF Senior Citizen Day, and served her community as an Election Poll Worker. Her contributions to these organizations were a testament to her selfless nature and her desire to make a difference.

Above all, Granny’s heart belonged to her family. She was preceded in death by her father, Irvin Paul Delbasty, Sr., her mother, Frances Eulyn Morgan Delbasty, and her brother, Irvin Paul Delbasty, Jr.

Her legacy continues through her loving children: Kevin, Kirk, and Niki Powell; her cherished grandchildren, Jake Powell and his wife Lily, Baillie Powell, and the late Cameron Chapman; and her adored great-grandchildren, Miyah and Oaklynn Powell. Mary Ann also leaves behind her niece Tanza Delbasty, nephew Troy Delbasty, sisterin- law Mary Ann “Meme” Delbasty, and her special family Jan McCreight and Braden Taylor.

Granny’s love for her family was unparalleled. She embraced the role of a devoted mother and grandmother like no other, crafting a tapestry of memories that will be held dear by all who knew her. Becoming a great-grandmother only deepened her capacity for love, as she formed an indelible bond with her greatgranddaughter Miyah. Their shared Dairy Queen dates for a large cone became a cherished ritual, etching sweet memories that will forever bring smiles to the faces of her family.

Mary Ann’s journey through life was marked by her loving nature, her passionate engagement with the world, and her courageous spirit in facing challenges, including her final battle with cancer. She approached every aspect of life with a warm smile and open heart, touching the lives of many and leaving a legacy of love and service.

Granny’s story is not one of sorrow, but of celebration. It is the celebration of a life lived fully, of a woman who gave generously, loved deeply, and inspired many. Mary Ann Delbasty Powell’s memory will be treasured and her spirit will continue to guide those she has left behind. Her life was a testament to the impact one person can have on a community, and her memory will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Her presence will be profoundly missed, yet her legacy will endure through the love she planted in the hearts of her family and friends. Rest in peace, dear Granny - your memory will forever be a blessing to us all.
