Northrup
Gregory Lee Northrup, passed away on Jan. 17, 2025, in Austin, at the age of 76. Born on March 6, 1948, in Houston, Greg’s life was a testament to the values of hard work, faith, and family.
Greg’s journey began as the cherished son of the late Vivian (Watt) and Dorothy Northrup. He grew up in Houston and Angleton alongside his sister Mary and brother James. During his teenage years in Angleton, he had a passion for the rodeo, often with his mother’s unwitting consent.
In 1976, Greg married the love of his life, Sandra, and together they built a family rooted in love and faith. He and Sandra were blessed with two children: Byron and Erica. Greg’s role as a father was one of his greatest joys, and he took immense pride in his children’s accomplishments.
Greg’s educational pursuits led him to Sam Houston State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree that would serve as the foundation for his future endeavors. For over five decades, Greg worked in the cattle and agriculture industry. Greg’s love for his work extended to his feed business, where he enjoyed the opportunity to visit his customers and take pride in their cattle. He also worked for the United States Department of Agriculture for 20 years and was recognized as the USDA Enumerator of the Year in 2024.
Beyond his professional life, Greg was deeply committed to his church community and his faith. As a member of St. James Episcopal Church since 1972, he served in various capacities, including senior warden, junior warden, and as a participant in the Men’s Club and prayer ministry. His devotion to his church was a reflection of his faith-filled life.
He was an avid sports fan, with a particular passion for Texas Longhorn football and Houston Astros baseball, and he never missed an opportunity to watch a good basketball game. Above all, Greg cherished the time spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.
Those who knew Greg would describe him as a friendly and interesting man, whose presence was a gift to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His ability to connect with people from all walks of life, coupled with his unwavering faith, left a lasting impact on his community.
Greg is survived by his wife, Sandra; son Byron Northrup and wife Ebony; daughter Erica Brandt and husband Randy; grandchildren Dane, Preston, and Morgan Brandt; sister Mary Kahanek and husband Larry; brother James Northrup and wife Deborah; sister-in-law Betty Wachsmann and husband Glenn; brother-in-law Brian Varner and wife Shirley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Vivian and Dorothy Northrup, infant son Gregory William Northrup, father-in-law Walter Pietsch, father-in-law and motherin- law Walter and Mildred Schulz, and sister-in-law Peggy Varner.
As we bid farewell to Greg, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and the lessons he imparted. His spirit will continue to guide us, and his memory will be a beacon of light for generations to come. Rest in peace, Greg. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
