Miertschin
Funeral services for Monroe Miertschin, 87 of Winchester, were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester with Rev. Nate Hill officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Giddings American Legion York Post 276, followed in the church cemetery.
Monroe Carl Miertschin was born on Aug. 26, 1937, in Winchester to Carl John Miertschin and Wilhelmine Martha (Symank) Miertschin. He was baptized on Sept. 5, 1937, at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester by Rev. Louis Trinklein and confirmed on March 18, 1952, also at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church by Rev. G. Heinemeier. His confirmation verse was Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” He graduated from Giddings High School and attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La. On Aug. 28, 1959, Monroe was united in marriage to Carolyn Juanita Brannen in Pasadena. After Carolyn’s death in 2007, he married Carolyn Marie Bohot on Aug. 6, 2008, in Giddings. Monroe worked for Conoco for 30 years, which gave him the opportunity to work and live in different places. He moved his family from Pasadena to West Lake, La., Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Uvalde, and New Orleans, La. While in Dubai, he was able to travel to many countries including Kenya, Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Cyprus, Thailand, Singapore, and Ceylon. Monroe retired to Winchester. For the past seven years, he resided in assisted living facilities in Round Rock.
His faith was always an important part of his life. In every place he lived, he was an active participant of a local church and contributed to the community. While living in Dubai, he gave of his time to serve and make improvements at the missionary-supported maternity hospital in Fujairah. He was an active member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester where he had served as an elder and treasurer of the congregation. He was also a member of the Winchester Volunteer Fire Department. Monroe had a deep love for music and especially singing. Throughout his life he sang in numerous choirs and barbershop quartets including the Chord Rangers and Acapella. He enjoyed fixing things and at one time did repairs on radios and televisions. He was a family-oriented man who worked hard to provide for and take care of his family. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who could brighten the day for others with his warmth and kindness.
Monroe passed away the morning of Friday, May 16, 2025, in Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; both of his wives, Carolyn Miertschin and Carolyn Bohot; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Masselink; two brothers, William “Bill” Miertschin and John Miertschin and his wife, Emma; two sisters and brothers- in-law, Marie and Charles Winkler and Violet and Thomas Tarpey, and one sister-inlaw, Evelyn Miertschin.
Monroe is survived by his four children, Susan (Richard) Marlin of Uvalde, Brenda (Rick) Masselink of Round Rock, Monroe Carl (Charla) Miertschin, Jr. of Abilene, and Annette Alvarado of San Antonio; eleven grandchildren, Johnathan (Emily) Masselink of Round Rock, Timothy Marlin of Uvalde, Stephanie Alvarado of Pflugerville, Sarah (Christian) Pieper of Urbandale, Iowa, Denise Alvarado of San Antonio, Rachel Marlin of Uvalde, Matthew (Catherine) Alvarado of San Antonio, Thomas (Abby) Masselink of Austin, Stacey (Toby) Amodeo of Raleigh, North Carolina, Michael Alvarado of Winchester, and Joshua Miertschin of Rushford, Minnesota; nine great grandchildren, Greyson Carey- Wodarz, Bennett Alvarado, Rylee Masselink, EmmaAlvarado, Emma Pieper, Eloise Alvarado, Cameron Masselink, Avery Pieper, and Judah Masselink; two sisters-in-law, Carol Miertschin of Pearland and Judy (Don) Wagner of Washington; cousin, Joan Miertschin of La Grange, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
