Reimund Frank Mertz, affectionately known as Dad and Poppie to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2024, in La Grange, at the age of 99.

Reimund was born on Dec. 29, 1924, in Shelby to Robert Lee Mertz and Edna Ullrich Mertz. He was baptized on May 3, 1925, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby, Texas by Pastor M.C. Hoermann. He was confirmed on Sept. 8, 1940, at St. Paul by Pastor Julious Bosshard.

Reimund was a man of integrity, hard work, and an unyielding love for his family. Reimund’s early life in Shelby laid the foundation for a lifetime of dedication to his community and country. Although his formal education concluded after the 7th grade, Reimund’s wisdom and knowledge grew through his experiences and the relationships he built.

He proudly served his country during World War II, a time that would shape his character and fortitude. After serving in the war, Reimund returned to his roots and again worked on the family farm. Soon, Reimund met the love of his life, Burdella Lange, and they were united in marriage on Jan. 24, 1954. The couple eventually moved to Houston, where he worked as a welder. They remained in Houston until 1985 when they returned to “the country.”

Reimund’s work ethic shone brightly in every task he undertook, a trait that was evident even in his later years when greeted customers at Walmart until the age of 90. He wasn’t just a friendly face at the entrance; he was the heart of the store, loving every opportunity to engage with the community and share a kind word and “Welcome to Walmart”!

Reimund’s love for the outdoors was not limited to his work. He found solace and joy in gardening, where his hands nurtured the earth and cultivated beauty for all to enjoy. This continued even while living at the Oakland Manor Nursing Home. He loved spending time in the woods for hunting with his family and friends. But above all, Reimund’s greatest joy was his family. He especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose lives he enriched with his stories, guidance, and unconditional love. Reimund’s life was a testament to the values he held dear: hard work, service to his country, and devotion to his family. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones.

Reimund Frank Mertz was not just a man of the land, but a man for the people, leaving behind a trail of warmth, kindness, and gentle humor that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed. As we bid farewell to Reimund, we reflect on a life well-lived, a life that touched so many with its genuine care and affection. He has left an indelible mark on this world, one that will be cherished and honored by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Reimund’s journey on earth may have concluded, but his spirit remains with us, guiding us with the same love and wisdom that he so generously shared throughout his remarkable 99 years.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Burdella Lange Mertz. Reimund’s passing was also preceded by his sister and brother-in-law, Hilma and Clinton Hetzel; brother and sister-in-law, Claude and Sylvia Mertz; brother and- sisterin- law Elo and Vernell Mertz; his brother-in-law and sister in- law, Kermit and Dorothy Lange; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emmit and Janie Lange; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cedall and Tom Baack and his stepgrandson Jamie Faulk.
