Mathis
Kenneth E. Mathis, known affectionately to friends and family as Ken, passed away in Round Top, on Saturday, June 15, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and dedication. Born on Feb. 14, 1940, in Enigma, Georgia. Ken’s intelligence and analytical mind were matched only by his love for family and passion for life’s simple pleasures.
Ken’s early years in Enigma laid a foundation for a life of service. The family moved to Miami, Fla. at the age of ten. After graduating from North Miami High School in June 1958, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in February 1959, where he served his country with distinction as a Radar Technician and Radio Engineer in Okinawa. Ken was recognized with the Good Conduct Medal (1st Award) and Marksmanship Badge. Following his honorable discharge as Corporal, he continued his commitment to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve Unit until Feb. 3, 1965.
With a pursuit of knowledge, Ken earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech University. He went on to achieve a Masters of Science in Industrial Administration from Purdue University, Indiana. He retired from Bayer Corp. in Baytown in 1999. Ken and Joy moved to Round Top where he worked on the farm, delivered Eckermann’s sausage and was groundskeeper for St. Paul Lutheran Church where he was a member. He was also a member of the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department, Colorado Valley Marine Corps League, Shelby Hermann Sons Lodge and an avid blood donor all through his Marine and civilian life, donating 33 gallons of blood throughout this time.
Ken was the beloved son of the late Cauley F. Mathis and Ethel (Griffin) Mathis, late brother Ben Mathis and step-sister Candy Connell. Ken’s journey through life was shared with the mother of his children, Ellen Hughes Mathis, and his loving wife of 34 years, Joylene Klaus Melton, who together created a blended family in 1990, a source of immense pride and joy. His legacy lives on through his daughter, Margaret Formoso and her husband Juan, his son, Michael Mathis, his step-daughter, Michelle Melton Gest and her husband Tim, and his stepson, Brian Melton. Ken was a proud grandfather to Diego Formoso, Marlena Formoso, Kyle Gest, Anne-Elise Gest, Landon Gest, and uncle to two nephews. All of whom brought great happiness to his life.
Ken’s interests were diverse and passionate. Gospel music resonated with his soul, and he took every opportunity to sing in his rich baritone voice, especially enjoying the works of Emmylou Harris. An avid traveler, Ken captured the world through the lens of his camera, combining his love for photography and appreciation of the outdoors. Those who knew Ken would describe him as a wise and intelligent man. His analytical approach to problemsolving was evident in every aspect of his life. Ken will be remembered for his ability to see through complexity and guide others with clarity and thoughtfulness.
As we bid farewell to Ken, we celebrate a life well-lived on Saturday, June 29, with visitation from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shelby. The Memorial Service will follow at 10 a.m. His was a journey marked by accomplishment, service, family and the unwavering pursuit of knowledge. Kenneth E. Mathis will be deeply missed, but his spirit will endure in the stories, lessons, and love he left behind.
