Koenning
Audrey Mae (Bittner) Koenning passed away on June 6, 2025. She was born on Aug. 16, 1931, at home in Warda to her parents Herman and Emma (Lorenz) Bittner. She was baptized on Aug. 23, 1931, by Pastor Paul C. Eifert at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda. She was married on Oct. 30, 1949 to Milton E. Koenning by Pastor Paul Eifert at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Warda. They made their home in the Winchester area until Milton passed away on Feb. 23, 2017.
Audrey worked for several years at Fayette Memorial Hospital, Consolidated Frozen Food Lockers, and Lee County Farmers Co-op, as well as assisting Milton with their farming and livestock operations.
Audrey taught Sunday School at St. Michael’s Church for 32 years, sang in the church choir, and served as secretary/treasurer for the Women’s Missionary League. She served as director for the American Cancer Society, La Grange chapter and as member of the Winchester Extension Home Makers club as well as Adult Leader for the Winchester 4-H club. For years, she assisted in assembling Braille Bibles for the vision impaired.
Audrey enjoyed cooking, traveling, and visiting with her many friends and relatives.
Audrey is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kay Teinert and husband Doug of Winchester; granddaughter, Shanna Teinert Ash and husband Patrick of Denver, Colo., grandson, Keith Teinert and wife Brandi of Lumberton; great-grandsons, Alex and Owen Ash, and many nephews, nieces and friends and relatives.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; her parents, Herman and Emma Bittner; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian Herbert Schulze and Elenor and Lother Kruemcke.
A visitation was held prior to the funeral service on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church of Winchester. Funeral services followed at 10 a.m. Following the funeral service, burial took place at the St. Michael’s Lutheran Cemetery in Winchester.
Serving as active pallbearers are Keith Teinert, Patrick Ash, Max Kruemcke, Zane Kruemcke, Kyle Koenning, and Kevin Mc-Carly. Honorary Pallbearers are Shanna Ash, Alex Ash, Owen Ash, Kenneth Schulze, Jay Kruemcke, Steven Kruemcke and Amanda Pennybaker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministry, St. Michael’s Lutheran Church of Winchester or to a charity of one’s choice.
