Michael Charles Koenig, affectionately known as Mr. Mike to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully in La Grange, Texas. Born on January 8, 1949, in St. James, Minnesota, he was a beacon of light and laughter to all who knew him. Michael’s journey through life was marked by his unwavering faith, his enduring kindness, and his uncanny sense of humor.
Mr. Mike was a devoted family man who cherished his wife of 27 years, Deborah Koenig, with whom he shared a love that was evident to everyone around them. He was a proud father to Stephanie Koenig Vasquez and Rebecca Koenig, and a father figure to his stepson, Thomas O’Brien. He loved his visits with his son-in-law Joe Vasquez and his conversations with his sonin- law Mike Martin. He loved his brother-in-law, TJ Thomassen and their lively visits.
He leaves behind his sister, Jeanette Dexheimer in St. James, Minnesota and many other family members in Minnesota. His brother Russell Koenig and his parents preceded him in death.
The son of Cecelia and Floyd Koenig, Michael inherited a strong work ethic and a compassionate heart. His academic pursuits led him to study engineering, a field in which he excelled and later channeled into a successful career. As an entrepreneur and business owner, he established MC Koenig & Associates, where his leadership and innovative spirit were the driving forces behind the company’s growth and success.
He and Deborah found themselves in Round Top Texas in 2009. They built an art gallery, Orchid Tree Park and Gallery and formed new friendships throughout the years. Fayette County was their favorite homestead location and recently moved back in December 2024.
Michael’s Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life. He lived his beliefs through his actions, embodying the love and grace taught in the scriptures. His two visits to Israel were life long dreams and highlights of his belief in God.
Beyond his professional and spiritual endeavors, Mr. Mike was a man of many interests. He had a passion for woodworking, creating beautiful pieces that reflected his precision and attention to detail.
He enjoyed many vacation trips to various locations throughout his life. New York City was one of his favorite places to live in his earlier career.
Those who knew Michael will remember him for his wit and his ability to find humor in the everyday. His laughter was infectious, and his jokes were always delivered with a twinkle in his eye. He was faith-filled, kind, and carried a lightness that could brighten even the darkest of days.
Michael Charles Koenig’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and faith. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. As we bid farewell to Mr. Mike, we take solace in the memories we shared and the knowledge that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. His was a life well-lived, full of moments that will be cherished forever. Rest in peace, Michael. Your love and light will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 26 at the Round Top Rifle Hall between 5-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be to the Round Top Rifle Hall and to Round Top Festival Institute.
