Hopkins

Madelyn Hopkins, a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones in Fayetteville, Texas, on July 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Marye Madelyn Mock on October 19, 1938, in Onawa, Iowa, she was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

Madelyn’s early years were spent in the warm embrace of Onawa, where she attended West Monona High School and laid the foundations for a life characterized by resilience and a spirit of service. Her journey took her from the halls of her high school to the heart of her community, where she became a cherished figure through her various roles as a waitress, construction secretary, and elder caregiver. Madelyn, alongside her husband Gordon, who preceded her in death, co-owned Country Peddler Antiques and was a wellknown vendor at the Warrenton Antique Show, where her keen eye for treasures and her warm demeanor made her a favorite among patrons.

Her life was a tapestry woven with threads of selflessness and devotion to her family. Madelyn’s legacy continues through her children, James Mings (Shelly), the late Bill Mings, Daniel Mings (Lois), and Lari Hopkins (Steve), and her adoring grandchildren Will Hopkins(Lacey), Jessica Valencia(Dominic), Rebecca Fritsch (Clay), Noah Burrow- Hopkins (Laura), Brian Mings(Annie), Colton Mings (Amanda), Shannon Trogdon, Shelby Mings, Shawnee Mings (Hayden Herzog), Casey Simpson (Atalie) and greatgrandchildren, Tyler, Desiree, Rebekah, Sterling, Skyy, Daniel, Dawson, Kate, Kennedy, Jaden, Mitchel, Haygen, Tucker, Owen, Summer, Elizabeth, Emersyn, Dax, Beckett who were the joy of her life. She was the daughter of the late Herbert Mock and Mary Noble, and she leaves behind a loving brother, Terry Mock, and sisters Barbara Schmitt (Jim), Constance Phillips (Mel), Paula Swenson (Bill), Lana Brewer (Chuck), Gayle Freel (Randy), and Rebecca Newbury (Bob).

Madelyn’s life was one of simple pleasures and profound connections. She was often found with a Pepsi in hand, sharing stories and laughter with family and friends. Her love for reading transported her to distant lands and times, while her passion for flowers, antiques, and thrifting reflected her appreciation for beauty and history. Madelyn’s adventurous spirit shone through in her love for road trips and the occasional visit to the casino, where she enjoyed the thrill of the game.

She was the embodiment of love, her generous spirit touching the lives of all who knew her. Madelyn’s selfless nature was evident in every aspect of her life, from the way she cared for her elders to the open door she maintained for friends and family in need. As the author Helen Keller once said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched—they must be felt with the heart.” Madelyn’s life was a testament to this truth, as she created a world of beauty and love that was felt deeply by those around her.

Madelyn’s departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but her spirit remains a guiding light for her family. Her lessons of love, generosity, and selflessness will continue to resonate through the generations, shaping the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her memory will be cherished and honored, as she remains a beloved figure etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.

As we bid farewell to Madelyn, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life that inspired, nurtured, and uplifted. She was a woman of extraordinary character, whose presence enriched the world in countless ways. Madelyn Hopkins will be dearly missed, but her legacy endures, a beacon of love that will continue to shine brightly in the memories of those she loved.
