John Hignite, 101, of La Grange, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.

John was born in Hyden, Kentucky on Sept. 6, 1920, the son of John Y. Hignite and Sarah (North) Hignite.

At the age of 21, John began his working career at Lou Piker Metal Works in July of 1941, as a painter. Shortly thereafter, on Feb. 11, 1942, John enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed at U.S. Naval Base #3245, a Saipan Naval Base, which was used as a staging area for the Pacific Invasion during WWII. He served on the USS Cache of the Pacific Third Fleet, as a Visual Communications man, keeping our nations ships safe at sea. John received a Victory Metal for his service to our nation. John proudly served his nation for four years and was honorably discharged on Dec. 8, 1945 as a Seaman First Class V6 USNR.

John returned home and married his beloved sweetheart, the late Emma (Seale) on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1946 in Hamilton, Ohio.

In the late 1940s, the couple moved to Houston, Texas. John spent many enjoyable years working for Houston Light and Power/Reliant Energy where he earned the title of Supervisor. He retired in 1983 from Houston Lighting and Power Hiram O. Clarke Plant.

Following his retirement, John moved to Tyler. After the passing of his wife, Emma, on July 12, 2012, John moved to La Grange in January of 2014.

John was an avid gardener and could often be found working in his yard. He had a true spirit of Christ and was an active volunteer at the Assembly of God Church throughout his life.

He is survived by his goddaughter, Linda Morrison of La Grange; close friends Don Morrison and wife, Charlene, of Columbus, and Paul Mikula of La Grange; special nephews: Charles Edward Hignite and wife, Donna, of Sweetser, Indiana; Carl Dennis Hignite and wife, Sue, of Hamilton, Ohio, along with numerous other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma (Seale) Hignite; father, John Y. Hignite; mother, Sarah (North) Hignite; brothers: Karl Hignite and George Hignite, and sister, Irene Rymer.

A private service will be held at Tyler.
