Phillip “Phil” Hergert, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, in La Grange. Born June 13, 1934, in Bow, Wash., Phil’s journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and a steadfast faith. He was 90 years old.

Phil grew up in the scenic surroundings of Tacoma, Washington, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with educational pursuits and service. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he joined the United States Air Force, serving as a Jet Aircraft Mechanic. During his time in the Air Force, he met the love of his life, Cleta, and they were married upon his return to civilian life. He then furthered his education at Western Washington State College, earning a degree in education. Phil shared his life with his beloved wife, Cleta. Their enduring 66-year marriage was a testament to their mutual devotion and love. Together, they welcomed four children into their loving family. He will be greatly missed by their children, Kurt Hergert and Rebekah “Becka” (Hergert) McNulty, and their son-in-law Sean McNulty and granddaughters Megan Hergert, Julia Hergert, and Madeline “Maddy” McNulty, and grandson Maximus “Max” McNulty. Phil is survived by his loving brother Henry “Hank” Hergert and sisterin- law Carlene “Bonnie” Hergert. He was preceded in death by his seven sisters and five brothers, leaving a legacy of memories for his remaining family to cherish.

For over 30 years, Phil imparted wisdom and skills to young minds as a teacher of Industrial Arts, English, and Social Studies in the Franklin Pierce School District. His passion for education and his ability to inspire his students left an indelible mark on countless lives. A devout follower of Christ Jesus, Phil lived his faith every day, and his actions reflected the love and grace he found in his relationship with Jesus.

Phil’s interests were a mirror to his multifaceted personality. He was a self-taught musician, often playing the piano and guitar for his loved ones, filling the family home with melodies and warmth. His hands were rarely still, as evidenced by his love for cars. An avid car enthusiast, he not only owned multiple vehicles throughout his life but also meticulously restored a 1931 Model A pickup from the ground up. His culinary skills, especially his famous sourdough pancakes and waffles, were a highlight for his family during holiday gatherings.

Those who knew Phil would describe him as faithfilled, generous, and handy. He had a gift for fixing things, a heart for giving, and a spirit that embodied his deep-rooted Christian beliefs. Phil’s legacy is one of love, service, and faith.

As we bid farewell to Phillip “Phil” Hergert, we reflect on a life that was rich in love, laughter, and unwavering faith. His memory will continue to be a beacon of light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. Phil will be profoundly missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he gave will resonate for generations to come.
