Evelyn was baptized on Nov. 19, 1926, and confirmed March 20, 1940, at Trinity Hill Lutheran Church in La Grange. She is a member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Winchester.

Evelyn was a hard worker all of her life. She was forced to quit school as a sophomore when her brother was drafted in WWII, and there was no one to help her widowed mother run the farm. She walked two miles to and from La Grange every day to work in a restaurant, and then worked on the farm the rest of the time. She later worked as a waitress at Cottonwood Inn Restaurant for many years and then worked for La Grange ISD as a bus driver and as an aide in the Physical Education Department. She had some very interesting stories about those bus trips and certain young men (including her sons) from Winchester. While employed there she went to school 5 nights a week and earned her GED. She also loved to play dominoes and was honored to represent Fayette County in the Houston Go Texas Domino Tournament in 1997.

She spent the last 20 or more years before retiring as the owner and operator of Marsha’s Place in Winchester, where she hosted many special events, including pool, domino and dart tournaments. Evelyn considered her patrons as family and was affectionately known as “Granny” to young and old alike.
