Goodrich
Johnnie Marie Schmidt Goodrich, 96, passed away peacefully at home on May 31, 2020.
Johnnie grew up in Port Isabel with her sister, Rosemary, and parents, Sammie Long and John Henry Schmidt. After graduating from Texas A & I in Kingsville she embarked on a 61 year marriage to James Davis (Jim) Goodrich. Jim and Johnnie first lived in Houston where she was a research pathologist at UTHealth School of Dentistry and MD Anderson Hospital during Jim’s long career at St. John’s School.
Johnnie began volunteering with Crisis Hotline in Houston, where she was recognized for her many service hours. After Jim’s retirement, they moved to their beloved Lonesum Pine, and Johnnie volunteered at the Fayette Public Library and Second Chance Emporium. Expanding on her love of quilting, she began making quilts for Jim to take on his annual mission work-trips to Mexico with the CUPS organization, accompanied by grandchildren and local youth, providing an excellent example of giving and kindness. Johnnie hosted a monthly quilting group which continued sending quilts to disadvantaged children in Mexico and to area community groups.
Family was important to “Grandmother” and she made cherished quilts for each of her children and grandchildren, attended various children’s and grandchildren’s events, played cards with them, made yeast rolls and jelly with them, baked dewberry cobbler and snickerdoodles when they came to visit, and took them out to her garden. All will remember her gifts of time and kindness.
Johnnie Marie is survived by her children, Jimmie Lee Grossman, John Davis (JD) Goodrich and wife Candy, Jay Samuel Goodrich (Sam) and wife Jo Ann; grandchildren, Tina Goodrich, Chad Dailey and wife Yvonne, Jeanna Balreira and husband Cabral, Marc Goodrich and wife Sarah, Jamie Goodrich, and Julie Harrison and husband Troy. She is also survived by great grandchildren, Josh Mugica, Lincoln Dailey, EJ Balreira, and Jude Goodrich; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Johnnie joins with the Lord Jesus, her beloved husband, Jim Goodrich; sister, Rosemary Bell; great granddaughter, Jessica Mugica; and other loved extended family members.
