Edward Raymond Chovanec, 82, of Columbus, passed away on June 21, 2022.

Edward was born in Bastrop on Dec. 19, 1939, the son of Ed and Rosie (Janecka) Chovanec.

Ed graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1958. He graduated from Houston Fire Academy in 1961 and retired from the Houston Fire Department after 40 years of service. He was a member of the International Fire Fighters Union and Houston Fire Fighters Local 341.

On Nov. 18, 1962, he married Minnie Ann Wagner. He honorably served his country in the Army National Guard for eight years. Edward was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fayetteville.

Ed spent much of his spare time being active in his community. For 20 years, he coached and umpired girls’ softball for the Spring Branch National Little League. He always led the opening day parade with a fire truck. He was chosen 11 times by the girls to be All-Star manager. He was an active member of the Spring Branch Civic Club, and driver for the Spring Branch Citizens Patrol. He was an active member of the Spring Branch FFA Booster Club and Young Farmers, and actively participated in their shows and sales. He took many of the FFA and Young Farmers on camping trips to his farm, they called him Father Ed.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Minnie Ann Chovanec; daughters: Shannon Miller of Winedale, and Brenda Larson of Cypress; son Brian and his wife, Kim of Brushy Area, Columbus; grandsons: Ben Miller and his wife, Katy, Craig Miller and his wife, Kara, Garrett Larson, Bryce Larson, Jeremy Fuentes and his wife, Haley; great-grandchildren: Austin Miller, Blake Miller, Easton Miller, Bodhi Miller, Danica Fuentes and Truett Fuentes; brothers: Ludwick Chovanec of Hockley, Jerome “Jerry” Chovanec and wife, Shirley of Fayetteville; brothers-in-law: Robert Wagner of Winedale, and William Wagner and his wife, Linda of Paige; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Rosie Chovanec; father and mother-in-law: Benno Wagner and his wife, Anita (Oppermann); brother, Lawrence Chovanec; sister-in-law, Margie Chovanec; sons-in-laws: Glen Miller and Rohn Larson; brothers-in-law: Franklin Wagner and Alois Wagner and his wife, Barbara.

Visitation was held on Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Koenig -Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations, La Grange. Family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral Services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2022. Burial followed at Fayetteville City Cemetery in Fayetteville.
