    Burrough

John Stephen Burrough, a man of the land and a heart filled with generosity, left this world on Jan. 22, 2024, at the age of 73, after a valiant battle with complications of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Born on Nov. 23, 1950, in La Grange, John’s roots ran as deep as the ancient oaks that dotted the landscape of his beloved Fayette County. He passed away peacefully in Austin.

John’s early years were spent in the nurturing environment of his grandparents farm, near Ellinger. During weekend and summer visits to their farm, he developed a love for the outdoors and the values of hard work and family. After graduating from Bellaire High School and working in Houston, John embraced his calling as a cattle rancher and farmer, assisting his mother and father tending to the family’s land.

He was a beloved brother to James Jr. (Jim) and his wife Pat, and to Paul and his wife Molly. John’s legacy continues through his children, John Paul Burrough, Michelle Burrough Muske, and Starrett Burrough. He is survived by eleven grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, James and Ruby Zapalac Burrough and his great-grandson Carson Burrough.

John’s interests extended beyond the pastures and fields of his work. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, finding solace and joy in the natural beauty of the family farm. He and his brothers fondly remember the many days fishing with their father in his grandfather’s farm tanks, the nights running trotlines in the river and the days hunting squirrels. His love for these pursuits was more than a hobby; it was a testament to his connection with the land and the simple pleasures of life.

To those who knew him, John was the embodiment of the words handy, loving, and generous. He could fix a broken fence or a tractor with the same ease that he could help a friend, always there with a tool in hand or an offer to help. His generosity knew no bounds, and his love was a gift he freely gave to all who had the fortune to cross his path.

John’s life was one of quiet heroism, marked by the daily acts of love and service to his mother after his father’s passing. His love for his mother defined his existence. He was a man who spoke through his actions, his integrity and sincerity never needing the fanfare of words. His presence was a comfort, his laughter a joy, and his practical wisdom a guide.

As we say farewell to John, we take solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the rustling leaves of the trees he once climbed, in the fertile earth he nurtured, and in the hearts of those he loved. We will remember his warm smile, his gentle demeanor, and the indelible impact he made on our lives.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church of Ellinger on Friday, Feb. 16, 2024 at 10 a.m.
