Sept. 18-24, 2022 marks the 67th year the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will celebrate Constitution Week. To honor the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution, the Smith-McMillan Chapter of DAR will hold a Ringing of the Bells ceremony. We ring the bells to celebrate the signing of the Constitution. On Sept. 17, 1787, the delegates of the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. As the delegates were leaving the Pennsylvania State House at 4 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), the bells were rung to signify the signing of the Constitution. Constitution Week began in 1955 when the President General of the DAR, Gertrude S. Carroway, adopted a project to promote the observance of the U. S. Constitution with a memorial week beginning on the anniversary of the signing of this document, Sept. 17. The DAR petitioned the U.S. Congress to dedicate Sept. 17-23 of each year to the commemoration of Constitution Week. Congress adopted the resolution, and on Aug. 2, 1956, President Dwight D Eisenhower signed it into Public Law #915.

Christina “Christy” Berger, board certified family nurse practitioner, begins at St. Mark’s Medical Center’s (SMMC’s) Orthopedic Clinic on Sept. 12, and will see patients of all ages. A native of Kyle, Berger graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S.N. from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, and with high honors, an M.S.N. with a Family Nurse Practitioner specialty from the University of Texas Arlington. She previously worked as a Med/Surg nurse at SMMC, as well as roles at long term acute care facilities. “We are thrilled to have Christy join the practice,” said Dr. Jonathan Blake, board certified orthopedic surgeon at St. Mark’s Medical Center. “She brings a wealth of experience, including geriatric and chronic disease care, which can make orthopedic patient care more complicated.” Berger grew up playing football and basketball with her twin sister and six brothers, and developed a love for sports, even though it sometimes resulted in bumps and bruises. “I had more than my share of sports injuries,” said Berger.

Fall is a busy time, and October is a particularly eventful month with school, community and sports activities in full swing. It’s also when all cooperatives celebrate National Coop Month. Reagan Wasut of Fayetteville has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2022 Dean’s List. The summer terms run from May to August. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/ spring, and summer.

The Fayette County Disaster Recovery Team (FCDRT) handed the La Grange City Council a check for $50,000 at a meeting Monday. The donation will go toward development of a future park in the Hope Hill subdivision, the neighborhood built for survivors of the historic Hurricane Harvey Flood of 2017.

Most folks in Fayette County hearing the news of Queen Elizabeth’s death can hardly imagine the pomp and ceremony of a Royal funeral and the upcoming coronation of the new British King, Charles III. That’s not the case for Chef Mike Morphew of Le Petite Gourmet Shoppe of La Grange. Morphew worked in the kitchens of Buckingham Palace from 1969 to 1971, where he cooked meals for the Royal Family.
