Chemical Spill on Highway 71

A tanker truck carrying a hazardous material (reportedly chlorine-based) wrecked Sunday night on Highway 71 near the Power Plant Road. Crews worked overnight trying to clean up the scene. Traffic was diverted through Fayetteville. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said there was “no danger to the community.” More on this developing story in Friday’s edition.

Fleming Speaks at the Fayetteville Graduation

Fayetteville was the first county school to hold its graduation ceremony as their seniors got diplomas Friday in the school’s gym. The featured speaker was Retired U.S. Army Captain Chad Fleming Fleming is a highly decorated war hero who deployed five times after becoming an amputee. He is one of the few who have been able to redeploy into combat as an amputee.

Helms and Zapalac Top of SHS Class

Schulenburg High School will hold its graduation ceremonies Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at the Schulenburg Gymnasium. The Valedictorian of the senior class is Blake Helms. He is the son of Melissa and Chad Helms. The Salutatorian is Riley Zapalac, the daughter of Callene and Patrick Zapalac. Other members of the Top-10% include Haylie Goode and Meredith Magliolo.

The La Grange Senior Citizen Activity Center Inc. will host game day on Thursday, May 23, from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the City of La Grange Randolph Recreation Center. Hollywood Comes to Round Top

The inaugural Round Top Film Festival (RTFF) is now accepting film submissions for the 2024 festival, taking place November 7-10, in Round Top. The event is founded by Shanna Schanen and Skylar Schanen, a dynamic motherdaughter duo, who both have deep connections to Fayette County.

Gardening Kids’ Kamp in June

The Bluebonnet Master Gardeners, in conjunction with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension team, are pleased to announce our 7th year of holding Kids’ Kamp in Austin, Colorado, Fayette, and Washington Counties. This camp is designed to be educational but fun with the goal of igniting a passion in the youth of our area to the importance and enjoyment of gardening through unique experiences.
