Shelter Update

As of Feb. 9, total intake for the Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter is 145: 80 dogs and 65 cats in need. As of Feb. 9, the shelter has 81 animals in care: 47 dogs/34 cats. This number includes animals in the facility, in foster care for medical, waiting on available space, or awaiting transport.

American History Essay Contest Winners Announced

The Smith-McMillan chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors various events throughout the year to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Two such events are the American History Essay Contest which is open to students in grades 5-8 and the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest which is open to students in grades 9-12. Students may attend public, private, or parochial schools, as well as homeschooling.

Peter is the son of David and Courtney Kieke. The presentation was made by the Smith-McMillanDAR American History Committee Chair, Claudia Valastro.

Vasek Celebrates 90th Birthday

Evelyn Vasek celebrated her 90th birthday with a party Saturday at Care Inn with family and friends. Everyone enjoyed cake and reminiscing with the birthday girl. Her actual birthday is Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Green Door Fund Launches March Matching Program to Empower Rural Students and Enhance Local Workforce

The Green Door Fund for Workforce Development and Education, an internal program of the Fayette Community Foundation, is committed to providing job awareness, training, and career opportunities to local students and young adults in Fayette County and the surrounding rural region. Emphasizing alternatives to traditional college education, the fund aims to support local students who represent the overlooked and underserved 38% of high school graduates in the U.S. who do not pursue college, along with the 16% who do not graduate high school. Led by an Advisory Council comprised of noted and trusted members of our community, The Green Door Fund is working towards enhancing the quality of life for all members of our rural region by helping our youth find meaningful employment and our businesses find the staff they need to operate successfully.

Fayette County 4-H members competed in the San Antonio Livestock Show Food Challenge Contest on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
