Schulenburg ISD will hold its graduation ceremonies Friday May 23 at 7 p.m. The valedictorian of the Schulenburg Class of 2025 is Madison Kunschick. She is the daughter of Michelle and David Kunschick. The salutatorian is Chayse Deagen. She is the daughter of Kirsten and Daniel Deagen.

Are you a train enthusiast or just interested in local history? Author and railroad historian Ken E. Stavinoha will speak on “The Golden Era of Railroading in Texas” on Thursday evening, May 22, in the meeting room of the Fayette Public Library.

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Tuesday afternoon, May 13 around 5 p.m. the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a loader on fire on property off FM 954 north of Wunderlich Rd. in the Willow Springs area.

Schulenburg Hermann Sons donated $1000 to the Schulenburg American Legion Post 143 flag fund supporting the legion’s annual “flags on graves” program prior to Memorial Day. Hermann Sons President, Ed Moeller pictured in the middle, presents a check to the local Legion Post in the amount of $1,000 for use in purchasing flags for veteran’s graves in the Schulenburg and surrounding area cemeteries. Pictured from left to right are Legion members Jack Niesner, and Gerald Smith. On the other side of Moeller are Ed Semler and Ken J. Berger, also Legion members. The Legion places flags on the graves of veterans in these cemeteries each year prior to Memorial Day. Last year the Legion members placed flags on over 1,250 graves of deceased veterans. Even more flags will be placed on graves for this year.

W Nikki Gooch, daughter of Sandy and Glen Zoch and granddaughter of Angie Zoch, all of Winchester won the Wesley Nurse of the Year award this year from Methodist Healthcare Ministries as a faith-based community nurse. Nikki is the wife of Brandon Gooch and the proud mom of Blair, Ambri, and Kaydin.

On May 17 at 11:30 pm, Columbus Police Department responded to the 1100 block of Walnut Street in reference to gunshots. Officers located a victim that had been shot. Colorado County EMS was summoned to the scene and took the Victim to the Columbus Community Hospital, where the victim, Mitchell Levard Austin, 37 of Columbus succumbed to his wounds. The Columbus PD is working this case as a murder and is requesting the assistance of any person who may have knowledge of this crime to either contact their agency at (979)732-3351.

Fayette County 4-H members competed in the District 11 4-H Livestock Judging Contest on Saturday, May 3 in College Station. They won the District 11 4-H Sweepstakes the past three years.

Former La Grange doctor Thomas Mueller, who has spent the last 24 years at Columbus Community Hospital, officially retired May 9 after a total of 48 years as a doctor. .

Cal-Maine Foods, which operates a number of chicken houses in the Flatonia area (but has dozens of locations around the country) was a recent subject of a Wall Street Journal article entitled: “There’s a National Egg Crisis, and One Company Is Making a Lot of Money: The price of eggs has tripled, and no one sells more of them than Cal-Maine” The story states, “Its 50 million hens produce roughly one out of every five eggs sold in the U.S. As egg prices have tripled in three years during a nationwide bird-flu epidemic, its stock has doubled. That makes it public enemy No. 1 for lawmakers and regulators trying to restrain the forces of food inflation.” ...
