Tales in Clay and Color: Las Cuentistas Opens at Ross Gallery

Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) presents Las Cuentistas: The Storytellers, a new gallery exhibition by Michelle Cuevas and Pamela Enriquez-Courts. An exhibition opening will be held Saturday, June 14 from 4–6 p.m. at the Ross Gallery in Fayetteville. Featuring a blend of ceramics and paintings, this collection of work celebrates cultural heritage and the art of storytelling. Michelle creates decorative shrines, narrative story boxes, and hand-built functional wares like mugs, plates, and teacups. Each piece begins as a simple slab of clay, shaped and formed by hand. Once constructed, the pieces are glazed in bold, brilliant colors and patterns. Michelle hand-paints every piece with intricate designs inspired by traditional Mexican textiles and elements of pop culture.

Monday Marks Three Years Since Hostyn Church Fire

Monday May 9 marks the three-year anniversary of the fire that destroyed Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hostyn. The fire was sparked by a gas leak and killed church member Verlene Kuntschik, who arrived early for a weekday service that morning. At this weekend’s masses, the church prayed for Kuntschik and it was also announced that the rebuild of a new $11.5 million church may begin in late summer or early fall this year. The beginning of construction has hit a snag as the parish tries to narrow the gap between what the new church will cost and the insurance money+donations they have. Above left is the fire on June 9, 2022 and the empty church lot as it looks now three years after the fire.

Record Goes on Vacation

• GOING SOMEWHERE THIS SUMMER? Take along a copy of The Fayette County Record, take a picture with it, and send it to us. We’ll get it in an upcoming edition.
For the 27th consecutive year, members of the Leo and Barbara Wick family of La Grange descended on the Texas coast for a beach trip. When not fishing or playing dominos, volleyball or bananagrams, they enjoyed reading The Fayette County Record, held here by Barbara Wick.
