Blown-out tires on a cattle trailer started about 20 small fires along several miles of FM 609 near Flatonia on Monday. The incident began around noon when two tires of a cattle trailer blew out while the pickup pulling it was heading south on FM 609.

The La Grange City Council voted 4-0 Monday evening to begin annexation proceedings for the Hope Hill subdivision on Horton Street. The vote was for a resolution directing City Manager Shawn Raborn to begin the annexation process. Raborn said a public hearing will be held on Aug. 6. He said the City will also send letters to residents of the neighborhood notifying them of the City’s intent to annex. After that, Raborn said the Council will consider a ordinance for formal annexation.

The Wednesday morning summer reading program events at the library concluded this week with a program featuring community heroes. Representatives from the La Grange Police and Fire Departments as well as Fayette County EMS talked to the kids and showed off their vehicles and equipment. A local girl won several world championships at the American Paint Horse Association Youth World Championship Show in Fort Worth earlier this summer. Teagan Kallus, a 12-yearold student at La Grange ISD, won team and individual horse knowledge and horse judging titles as well as several riding awards atop her horse Stanley.

Sunday, July 4, The Remnant Church in La Grange hosted a Freedom Church Service & Party for the community. The church service opened up at 5 p.m. with Krystin Hill singing the National Anthem. After that, The Remnant Church praise team led everyone in a time of worship. Pastor Kolbe Hill shared a message about depending on God for everything called, “Freedom is Found In Dependence.” At the close of the church service there were seven people who made their faith public through water baptism.

Bill Asbill is shown receiving a plaque for his dedicated service of over 21 years to the La Grange Housing Authority as Chairman and Vice-Chairman while a Commissioner with the Housing Authority. Asbill presided over his last meeting on June 30. He stated, “This is my third retirement. I retired after twenty and one half years from the Air Force as a Lt. Col., and from the telecommunication Industry in Richardson for over sixteen years before coming to La Grange.” Presenting the plaque is Gene Jaster, executive director.

Hostyn KJT Society No. 3 was excited to make a monetary presentation to the Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish in Hostyn. The society qualified for the KJT Home Office $500 Covid Relief Grant for both the society and their home parish. The grant will assist with hardships the virus has inflicted on the parish and society. The society qualified because of their efforts to continue their society functions with all the covid precautions in place. Receiving the donation on behalf of the parish was Pastor Fr. The reward money has increased for information about an individual wanted for murder. On May 30 of this year, David Harrison Jr. of La Grange was shot to death inside his River Valley Apartment in La Grange. The La Grange Police Department and the Texas Rangers have identified 34-year-old Charles Lee Tillman, Jr. of Weimar as the suspect in this murder.

Attends Wedding Nada and Ted Burns, and John and Debra Schwartzenburg traveled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa recently to attend their niece’s wedding. Becky Schwartzenburg was married to Will Trasowech.

Carmine Volunteer Fire Department Annual Feast and Fundraiser is this Sunday, July 18 with a drive-thru fried chicken dinner served from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. (or until sold out) at the Carmine Hall. Donations will be accepted as payment for the meal. Tickets are being sold for the drawing only and may be purchased from any CVFD member and at Carmine State Bank. If any are left, they will also be sold on the day of the fundraiser.
