West Columbia Pounds Leopards to Annex District 13 AAA Championship

The surest way to halt a football opponent is to keep him from converting third downs into first downs, and the surest way to build a lead is to convert those big ones and keep moving. That’s what the West Columbia Roughnecks did with mechanical thoroughness to grind out an 18-6 victory over the erratic La Grange Leopards to take all the marbles in the District 13AAA championship. The same night, the Schulenburg Shorthorns put 20 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter and went on to defeat the fired-up Flatonia Bulldogs 47-6, to earn the right to represent District 27A in the state playoffs.
In other old news, a forged check for less than $5 netted a Houston man a three-year suspended sentence in Judge Paul Huser’s court.
The Thanksgiving dinner special at Nickerson Farms at I-10 and Hwy. 90 near Schulenburg included: iced tomato juice, crisp tossed green salad, oven-roasted breast of young turkey, homemade bread dressing, garden fresh vegetables, whipped potatoes and giblet gravy, Cape Cod cranberry sauce, home baked fresh bread and country pumpkin pie. The cost was $2.75 for adults and $1.75 for children. The restaurant also sold Skelly Petroleum Products. Miss Sharon Malota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Malota of Fayetteville, was chosen by the senior class and school faculty at Fayette Rural High School to be the 1972-73 DAR Good Citizen. The Good Citizen contest was sponsored by the John Everett Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Columbus. Selection was based upon qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
Memorial services for 65 deceased members of Chromcik Council Knights of Columbus were held at Sacred Heart School auditorium with a concelebrated Mass offered for the deceased knights. The impressive candlelight service was conducted with Grand Knight Frank Brauner in charge. During the past year, the council had lost one member, Dr. John C. Guenther, who was eulogized by E.H. Francke. Concelebrants of the Mass were Father Harry Mazurkiewicz and Rev. Rudolph Hoffmann of Plum.
The United Church Women of La Grange were again conducting a toy drive for underprivileged children.
Representing the Fayette County Farm Bureau at the annual Texas Farm Bureau convention in Houston were: Elmo Minzenmeyer, Mr. and Mrs.William Coleman, Mr. and Mrs. John Zimmermann, Charles Janecka, E. H. Keilers and William E. Meyer. Also attending were Mrs. Minzenmeyer and office secretary Carolyn Rotter.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Norma Speckels, 54, of La Grange; Mrs. Louis (Nora) Heinsohn, 93 of Carmine; Lyttleton H. Fritsch, 66, of Ellinger; Walter F. Suess, 68, a native of Freyburg; Mrs. Erna Blankenburg, 80, of La Grange; and Traugott Schoppa, 100, of Winchester.
Seven young La Grange men were enrolled at Texas State Technical Institute in Waco. They were: Randy Otto, automotive mechanics; Kenneth Ripper, radio and television servicing; Tommy Synnott, auto body repair; Robert Svrcek, radio and television servicing; Allen Heinecke, automotive mechanics; Lamar Heintschel, automotive mechanics; and Marvin Kalina, diesel and construction equipment mechanics.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Janish of Fayetteville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 12, with Holy Mass at 11 o’clock at St. John’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ben Mazurkiewicz as the celebrant. The couple renewed their wedding vows and their families received a special blessing.
Mr. and Mrs. John Michalsky observed their golden wedding anniversary at the Michalsky Cafe in Fayetteville with about 300 relatives and friends. Helping the couple celebrate were their children: Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Michalsky and Rudy Michalsky of Fayetteville; Mr. and Mrs. John Michalsky, Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Michalsky and grandson, Johnnie F. Michalsky, all of Houston. Turkey and dressing, sausage and chicken meals were served throughout the afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Wunderlich of Warrenton observed their 25th wedding anniversary on Nov. 11 with a reception at Carmine Hall. Kermit Wunderlich and Nelda Ziese were married on Nov. 15, 1947, at Warrenton. They had two children: Nyla, a student at Texas A&M University, and Roger, an employee of 2-R Farms andTicker Tape Farms.
Edward L. Freudenberg, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Freudenberg of La Grange, returned from a trip to the Arabian Gulf. Employed by Buttes Gas and Oil Co. as its southwest division chief engineer, he witnessed the testing of the company’s oil discovery in the Gulf. His travels took him through Dubai, Sharjah, Kuwait, Bahrain, Beirut and London.
Dennis Petras, the son of Mrs. Millie Petras of Mullins Prairie, killed a 12-point deer on the Petras farm Saturday evening. It was the first deer harvested on the Petras place.
