We’re in Extreme Drought Earlier Than Usual
Here’s some information from Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Craig Moreau about the local drought status, and precautions we need to take because of it:
The KBDI drought index for the Fayette County is now at 719 out of a maximum 800. Fayette county has experienced drought of this magnitude many times in years past, but this is very early in the year for drought this extreme. In previous dry years the KBDI generally did not peak until August or September.
Certain areas of the county have experienced spot showers, but widespread and lasting rainfall is needed to push past the current drought. In addition to creating hardships for farmers and ranchers, heat and drought can cause injury or death to people and animals.
Please continue to look after those who cannot look after themselves, resources are available through multiple charities in our area.
• Please avoid ALL outdoor burning and common sources of ignition as wildfires will spread quickly in these conditions.
• Almost all Texas counties are now in a burn ban and many have been deemed by the Governer to be in a drought disaster.
• State resources may be limited during wide spread natural event due to multiple requests for the same assets.
