Uptick in Vehicle Thefts Seen

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office warns residents to keep their vehicles locked after several auto thefts in surrounding counties.

“I don’t know why we haven’t been hit yet, but it’s happening all around us,” said Lt. David Beyer of the Sheriff’s Office.

Most recently, the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office reported two vehicles stolen on April 1 between midnight and 6 a.m. A black 2003 Chevrolet 3/4 ton pickup was stolen from property along FM 1295 near Witting, and a white Ford F250 was stolen from property along FM 532 south of Moravia.

Beyer said the uptick in vehicle thefts across the area may be connected to illegal smuggling across the southern border. He said the thieves appear to be targeting pickup trucks.

The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to remove valuables from their vehicles and to keep unattended vehicles locked at all times
