U-Turn on Highway 77 Injures Two

A Houston man suffered serious injuries in a wreck on US 77 north of La Grange. The crash happened near the intersection of Bear Creek Road and US 77 around 4:17 p.m. on Sunday, May 7.

According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety, 58-year-old Troy Eugene Shelton of Houston was parked in a 2013 Ford F-150 in the shoulder on the northbound side of US 77. The report said Shelton attempted a U-turn on the highway and struck a maroon 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Jeep was 69-year-old Carol Ward Weathers of Cedar Lane. The pickup came to rest on its right side facing northwest in the middle of the highway. The Jeep came to rest facing south in the ditch on the west side of the highway. Multiple airbags deployed in both vehicles.

Shelton was not wearing a seat belt. He suffered serious injuries, according to report. Fayette County EMS transported him to Smithville Medical Center. Weathers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Fayette County EMS transported her to St. Mark’s Medical Center in La Grange.

Trooper April Galvan of the Texas Highway Patrol investigated the accident. She issued Shelton a citation for making an illegal U-turn on a curve or hill. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, La Grange Volunteer Fire Department and Winchester Area Volunteer Fire Department all assisted at the scene. The wreck blocked traffic Hwy. 77 for over an hour while emergency workers cleared the wreckage.
