An SUV struck a tractor that was trying to cross FM 609 on Wednesday, Sept. 20, resulting in serious injuries to both drivers.

The wreck happened around 5:18 p.m. at the intersection of Zimmerman Ln. and FM 609 near Hostyn, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The report said an 86-year-old man from La Grange was driving a John Deer 5055D farm tractor and attempted to cross FM 609 from a private driveway. A black 2015 Lincoln MKC driven by a 75-year-old woman from Flatonia was heading southwest of FM 609 and struck the tractor on its left side.

The driver of the tractor flew off the John Deere and landed in the roadway. Both drivers suffered serious injuries. A helicopter from PHI Air Medical flew the driver of the John Deere to Dell Seton Hospital in Austin. Fayette County EMS transported the driver of the Lincoln to Dell Seton by ground ambulance. She was wearing a seat belt, and multiple airbags deployed upon impact.

DPS cited the John Deere driver for failure to yield the right-of-way. DPS did not release the names of either driver. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
