Two Die in Wreck Just South of Schulenburg
Two men died and a woman was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash south of Schulenburg on Thursday, April 2.
According to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the crash happened around 7:34 p.m. on US 77 north of County Road 240 in Lavaca County.
DPS said their preliminary investigation indicated that a pickup traveling southbound driven by 54-year-old Ruben Perez Jr. of Hallettsville had crested a hill an approached a left-hand curve. The pickup drove onto the right shoulder, overcorrected, and crossed the northbound lane. It then collided with a northbound pickup truck driven by Daniel Joe Elizondo, 67 of Yoakum. The DPS report said Elizondo attempted to take evasive action prior to impact.
Both drivers, Perez and Elizondo, both died at the scene. Lavaca County Justice of the Peace Travis Hill was summoned to perform the inquest. A passenger in the northbound vehicle, Sandra Dee Deleon, 64 of Yoakum, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to San Antonio Military Medical Center.
DPS said the crash remains under investigation.
