Charley Smith announced June 28 that he was resigning, effective immediately, after 37 years as city attorney. “I’ve had enough,” Smith was quoted as saying, after dealing with several hot-button topics over the past few years relating to subdivisions, annexations and other issues.

Giddings Times & News

Several of the old oak trees around the Lee County courthouse may die as a result of the planned Lee County courthouse foundation excavation and repair in Giddings. The dig will cut into major root sections of some of the trees. Changes to the plan are being investigated to see if there is a way to minimize impact on the trees.

Giddings High School principal Chad Rood remains on a leave of absence pending an investigation by the school district. John Schumacher, a former superintendent at Mason and Gonzales, had been hired as an interim principal at Giddings High.

Final prep is being made for 2022 Float Fest, which is being held on a 765-acre ranch outside Gonzales and is expected to be three times bigger than previous Float Fests. This year’s lineup include Marshmello, Chance the Rapper, Vampire Weekend among others.

Navasota Examiner

A man was arrested during a burglary of Atlas Cash and Pawn in Navasota July 6. Titus Richardson, 61, of Navasota was arrested after officers responded and he was ordered to drop his firearm, a bb gun that resembled an assault rifle.
